In today's age, representation and inclusion is a highly important thing to have especially in media, and little by little, Disney, one of the biggest studios and companies in Hollywood, is taking its first steps in doing so with Strange World, an animated film with a member of the LGBTQ+ movie.
Is Disney's Strange World An LGBTQ+ Movie?
Strange World will follow a legendary family of explorers who found some differences between themselves but they are getting into a journey to Avalonia, a mysterious planet where surreal lifeforms live, and three generations of explorers will be diving deep into the unknown.
One of the members of the legendary family of explorers in Strange World is Ethan Clade, voiced by Jaboukie Young-White, and his appearance is a win for Disney's representation and inclusion. See, he is an openly gay character who joins the exploration to navigate his school crush, Diazo.
The introduction of Ethan as a biracial openly gay character garnered a lot of praise online and the character being introduced by Disney which speaks a lot about representation and inclusion. Ethan being queer plays a huge part of his narrative and it deserves the spotlight. Here are some of the tweets online:
Ethan Clade is a huge step for Disney and in the movie, his family encouraged him for whoever he wants to be. There is acceptance from within for Ethan to embrace his sexuality which speaks volumes a tenfold.
However, the same sparked quite a controversy online considering that Strange World didn't have much marketing as compared to other movies on Disney. Some noticed how Strange World wasn't advertised as much. Here is what people online are saying:
Strange World features the voice of Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, Dennis Quaid as Jaeger Clade, Jaboukie Young-White as Ethan Clade, Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal.
Strange World releases on Disney Plus on November 23, 2022.
