Is Crash Landing On You Based On A True Story?

Crash Landing On You is not your typical love story. With the popular series becoming the second-highest-rated cable drama in South Korea, there really is much more to it.

Crash Landing On You stars real-life couple Son Ye Jin and Hyun Bin. The series aired on tvN from December 14, 2019 until February 16, 2020. The Kdrama revolves around the interesting story of star-crossed lovers Yoon Se-ri, a rich entrepreneur and heiress to a conglomerate in South Korea, and Ri Jeongh-hyeok, a North Korean army officer.

Many are curious as to how this blockbuster Kdrama came into creation, with some speculating that it is actually based on true events.

Is Crash Landing On You Based On A True Story?

The writer for Crash Landing On You Park Ji Eun revealed that she drew inspiration for the Kdrama from a real-life event. This involves South Korean actress Jung Yang.

Park explained that the incident spiraling the news in 2008 inspired her to write this love story. In particular, Jung Yang and her friends rode a leisure ferry boat and sail across the shores of Incheon.

Not long after, the boat was swept away due to bad weather and went as close to crossing the Northern Limit Line that separates South Korea and North Korea.

Unlike the events in the series, Jung Yang turned the boat around when they heard the fishermen speak in a North Korean accent. To her distress, the actress sent an emergency message to the North Korean coast guard who was chasing after her.

Due to the event, the writer had thought how close North Korea is to her country that a person can get there without realizing it. Park also described North Korea as a place that is close but forbidden.

Getting inspiration from what happened, Park went on to explore a storyline where the protagonist accidentally lands in North Korea. Therefore, the arrival of the Kdrama Crash Landing On You.
