Injustice 2’s Expressive Animations Were Partly Thanks to Fans

Game development is always an evolution. And the more recent titles released will prove that the continuous improvement is something that developers always strive for, especially in the area of more realistic experiences and depictions.

This was one of the praises that Injustice 2 has enjoyed following NetherRealm's roll out of the game. That's because the new narrative and fighting system aside, the game is just so pretty to look at.

What's more, the look and feel of the characters look realistic, with all the emotions etched across their faces in both big and small ways. Character art designer Brendan George revealed to Comicbook.com that this was all thanks to their aim of catering to the fans' reactions of their works.

"The early reactions [to Injustice 2's faces] were not what we hoped for, but the passion of our fans helped the entire studio to focus on solving the problems. We determined that we needed to add new lighting features to achieve the softer look we were after. Facial animations were adjusted to become less exaggerated, which made them more appealing. All these changes combined with some small model and makeup adjustments gave us the look we were after."

The same attention to detail was given to the differences in the forms of the female and the male faces. This resulted in the smallest changes for the female faces, which highly differentiated the faces and created the dramatic impact that sets the praises high for the game.

True, these are very small aspects of the game that serve more as add-on bonuses than essential game changers. But it has proven that fighting games can be more than just button mashing—it can be as immersive as RPG just by the way you watch Supergirl's flitting emotions during fight scenes.

Injustice 2 is already out on the PS4 and Xbox One. It has a mobile tie-in game of the same title worth downloading.
