How Tom Holland’s Audition Sealed the Deal for Spider-Man: Homecoming

Anything that has to do with Spider-Man in Marvel movies can be polarizing. On the one hand, we're all undoubtedly excited for Spider-Man: Homecoming, given how actor Tom Holland performed in Civil War.

On the other, however, there's the innate apprehension of how another reboot will be like, given the previous two movie sets that have been made.

Over at Marvel's side, though, Holland's casting as the web-slinger is actually something that has been dubbed as pretty much a miracle for several reasons. In an interview (via Gamesradar), Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige revealed that the audition alone was the deal sealer for the role.

According to Feige, there were over a hundred kids that auditioned before Holland came in, but the moment he did, he showcased the qualities and charm that they were looking for in a young Peter Parker.

His audition included reading with Robert Downey Jr., and from what we've seen in Civil War and trailers of Spider-Man: Homecoming, his awe at the Avengers and at Tony (and technically, Downey Jr.) and his boyish charm were pretty much on point.

And that's not even the rest of it, because stunts-wise, Holland had a little extra to offer:

"The added bonus, and if it wasn't true you would think we were making it up, is that the same young actor who could do all this happens to be a trained dancer and gymnast, and could have been hired to be the best stuntman we've ever had playing Spider-Man. And that's no exaggeration. He can do all of it. There's only so much you can allow him to do as a responsible producer, but for the very first time not only is he a wonderful, age-appropriate actor but every movement of Spider-Man in the movie is him, either in an actual costume doing a stunt or doing the motion capture that becomes the computer-generated character."

We know that Holland has the moves, all right. And as far as being the fast-talking, forever amazed young hero, he can definitely hold his own among the seasoned ones in the Avengers. I'm very, very aware of my excitement for Spider-Man: Homecoming—yes, even if there are whispers that we've pretty much seen all there is to know about the entire plot from the trailers.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be out in theaters on July 7.
