How To Train Your Dragon Live-Action Movie Sets Filming Start Date Amid WGA Strike

Hollywood is all about live-action remakes and franchise reboots and How To Train Your Dragon is a part of that slate.

This year, a How To Train Your Dragon live-action remake was announced with original creator Dean DeBlois set to helm, pen, and produce the upcoming film.

While this may seem like good news for the live-action, fans remain furious at how the animated franchise is being treated in spite of all of its garnered success at the box office.

Previously, it was reported that the live remake was eyeing a summer date to begin filming in Los Angeles.

Now, a new report from the Production List website indicates that the How To Train Your Dragon live movie will commence on June 30 as a starting date for filming and production.

How To Train Your Dragon is undoubtedly one of DreamWorks Animation’s biggest franchises to exist as it not only held two more sequels in 2014 and 2019, but it also gained a couple of spin-offs and specials expanding the world of Berk.

So, while fans are enraged at the idea of remaking their childhood favorite, this just sank into reality — the live remake is inevitably happening.

Although, it is worth mentioning that this is the season of the WGA writers’ strike, which could mean, in spite of having completed scripts ahead of the strike, How To Train Your Dragon live-action could potentially delay its production.

Then again, with the original source material (the animated franchise) in existence, it is also likely that only a few tweaks have been made to fit the live-action version, which means filming could just as easily begin amid the WGA strike. You never know.

Aside from Dreamworks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon, Disney has also grown fond of adapting their old animated favorites into live remakes.

Most recently, Disney has adapted The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey as the titular princess mermaid Ariel, along with Lilo & Stitch, currently facing backlash for whitewashing its cast.

The live-action version of How To Train Your Dragon could easily make or break its success, even with the original creator on board in all of this.

How To Train Your Dragon live-action film is currently slated to premiere in theaters on March 14, 2025.
