Disney may be known for their live-action remakes of their classical animated films, but Universal Pictures has also just recently confirmed that a live-action remake of How To Train Your Dragon is already in the works.
Yup, you heard that right. Variety has confirmed that a live-action film is being developed with original film writer and director Dean DeBlois. Set to debut in 2025, the Oscar-nominated How To Train Your Dragon has yet to reveal more details, but it is safe to presume that the film will be featuring the same characters and storyline. In fact, casting calls are already reportedly in progress, too.
How To Train Your Dragon (2010) generated animated sequels: How To Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), along with a couple of spinoff series such as DreamWorks Dragons, Rescue Riders, and The Nine Realms, but it seems that the company still came to a conclusion of remaking the franchise into live-action. Upon hearing this news, fans took to Twitter their outrage at DreamWorks (which is under Universal Pictures “pulling a Disney”. Check out some of the fan reactions below:

It is worth noting that How To Train Your Dragon and its sequels were all nominated for Best Animated Feature by the Academy, and for good reason: for the animated stories. The franchise is also one of the few animated films that featured physically evident aging of the characters, which added to its charisma and uniqueness when it comes down to keeping up with the lives of the mythical Viking village of Berk. So the fans’ mixed reactions at the thought of redeveloping the fantasy adventure into live-action is understandable.
Although fans can certainly be relieved that the original creator is on board with all this. DeBlois wrote for all three films, and it’s only natural that the writer remains on the team to ensure the success and smooth sailing of the live-action film.
The live-action film of How To Train Your Dragon is currently slated to premiere in theaters on March 14, 2025.
