Since the start of the series, it was confirmed that it is Eleven who opened the very first gate between the world and the Upside Down which led an opening for the Mind Flayer to seep into Hawkins. Dustin calls it the “mothergate” and it was revealed how it all happened in the finale of Stranger Things Season 4 Vol. 1.
How Eleven Opened the Upside Down Finally Revealed in Stranger Things Season 4 Vol. 1
A lot of revelations happened in the last episode of Stranger Things Season 4 Vol. 1 which perfectly sets up the last two runs in Volume 2. There’s the bigger kids getting in and coming out of the Upside Down, at least half of them because Nancy was stuck and possessed by Vecna and Steve would not leave her by her side.
Then, there’s Dr. Brenner who gives progress for Eleven and skips time to play the last video they have as they are finally at crunch time to save the world and only she can face the looming threat to Hawkins and the whole world. In project Nina, it is the only way that Eleven could get her powers back, even amplified.
It was in the same tape which revealed who One is, the patient who seemed like a myth to others but all that time they were at the lab, he was also there with them, just subdued with the “Soteria.” It turned out to be the guy assisting Eleven, the guy who helps her tap into her painful and sad memories to strengthen her abilities. One saw potential with Eleven and wanted to get her to his side.

One is also the reason how Eleven opened the gate to the Upside Down. See, Eleven did not want what One did to the others – he slaughtered all of them in hopes of getting out. Eleven fought him and she almost lost to him. However, held onto her memories and she managed to get back on her feet, pinning One on the wall.
With all of Eleven’s might, she attacked One, supposedly incarcerating him, but instead, she opened a rift between worlds, the gate through Hawkins and the Upside Down, the very same one they tried to close at the end of Season 3. One was the gate and he flew right into the Upside Down, thus, becoming Vecna.
