The Boys season 4 episode 5 may have featured one of the show's most heartbreaking scenes yet. With that in mind, how did Hughie kill his dad in the first place? Considering that Hugh Sr. was pumped up with Compound V, how come Hughie managed to resolve it? Here's what fans believe happened.

Why and How Hughie Was Able to Kill His Dad?

As much as Hughie believed he could save his dad, Hugh Sr., from death with Compound V, the serum drove a different side effect from him.

While he was able to live and breathe again, he was also anticipated to have developed a superpower. Hugh Sr. could walk through people and inanimate objects but he cannot control it.

To make matters worse, he doesn't remember present-day events and is led to believe that his son Hughie is still a child. Hughie and his mother, Daphne, knew they had to put Hugh Sr. out of his misery fast before he killed anyone else in the hospital.

And how does Hughie do that exactly? Hughie once again used a fatal dosage of some kind of tranquilizer and injected it into his father as a way of mercy-killing him.

Although Hugh Sr. didn't understand it at first, he and Hughie eventually chose to live with the grief.

The episode was unquestionably a tear-jerker, but it didn't stop fans from asking how it was possible, especially considering that Hugh Sr. turned into a Supe after taking Compound V.

Fans Have Some Wild Theories: Hughie Might Have a Superpower

One of the things fans came up with is the fact that just because a Compound V-taking Supe is a Supe doesn't make them immortal. The Supe's powers vary and it's the same thing of being selective which hero has tough skin.

Take Sister Sage, for example, who admitted that shooting her in the heart can kill her but her brain regenerates. In this case, Hugh Sr. may not be as invincible as he appeared to be.

However, another thing that fans brought up is the possible reason behind what makes Hughie 'special.'

He may either possess a unique type of superpower that has yet to be known in The Boys or simply have the convenient knack of killing Supes through normal means, something that Butcher has been cheering him on forever since he murdered Translucent in the first season.

For now, we would have to wait until the show explains or confirms what fans have been suspecting about Hughie Campbell.
