It has been well over a year since the last episode was released, and finally, House of the Dragon will return next month. Ahead of its long-awaited return, we explore what happens next in House of the Dragon season 2.

Even though the series has the word dragon in its name, there wasn’t as much dragon action in the first season as some expected. With season 2 though, more dragons will be introduced, along with more action.

Spoiler Warning: This article includes spoilers for House of the Dragon season 1 and the Fire & Blood Book, so proceed with caution.

What Happens Next in House of the Dragon Season 2?

House of the Dragon season 1 ended with a major setup for a fight between Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Black faction and Aegon II’s Green faction.

While Rhaenyra wanted to unify with Aegon II to prevent a civil war, things will likely change as Rhaenyra receives the news of her son’s death.

Thus, the war between the Black and Green factions is inevitable. This plays into the plans of Rhaenyra’s uncle/husband Daemon who has continually asked Rhaenyra to go to war.

Given these events, House of the Dragon season 2 will likely show the beginnings of the civil war, and it will likely delve deeper into the complex relationship between Rhaenyra and Daemon.

HBO’s House of the Dragon is based on the Fire & Blood book by George R.R. Martin.

It’s not a novel in the same way that his A Song of Ice and Fire books are. Instead, the book is presented more as a historical account of House Targaryen, and it features six main texts.

The HBO series does not cover everything in the book. Instead, its events are based on The Dying of the Dragons which tells the story of the Dance of the Dragons – a Targaryen civil war.

Season 1 does not adapt the entire story as it expands the events that are told in the book.

Coupled with the fact that The Dying of the Dragons tells an expansive story, the series would possibly need four seasons, as reported by Deadline.

Given that there are still plenty of big events that take place in the book’s story, it’s not clear up to what point in the book the second season will cover.

Some events are likely to be shown in the new season. For instance, in the book, Daemon springs into action shortly after the death of Lucerys.

Daemon enlists the help of friends of his in King’s Landing nicknamed Blood and Cheese.

These two sneak into the Red Keep and proceed to restrain Queen Alicent. They then kill Prince Jaehaerys, one of Aegon II and Helaena Targaryen’s sons.

With the two sides having one dead prince each, the war between the Green and Black factions begins as lords loyal to each side call for their bannermen.

As the first season delved into the intricacies of Westerosi politics at the time, there will likely be a big focus on the efforts of Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of King Aegon II, as he gathers allies throughout the kingdoms.

The big battles of the civil war happen later in the story, including the Fall of King’s Landing as the Black faction marches on the capital.

There’s a chance the Fall of King’s Landing will be shown as it can make for a good season finale. After all, it ends with a stirring scene featuring Alicent and Rhaenyra.

Before the assault on King’s Landing though, a part of the original story delves into the training of potential dragonriders.

This is likely going to be shown as well in season 2 given that Ryan Condal mentioned in an Esquire report that viewers will get to see five new dragons.

Another potential dragon fight that viewers will likely see in season 2 is between Princess Rhaenys and Meleys versus Aegon II on Sunfyre and Aemond on Vhagar at Rook's Rest.

In the books, this is a massive dragon fight where only one will emerge victorious. The events here also lead to how the Black faction will be able to take King's Landing.
