House of the Dragon: Matt Smith Addresses Daemon Targaryen's True Intentions for the Iron Throne

In Game of Thrones, it seems like everyone wanted to take the Iron Throne for themselves. Not surprisingly, the seemingly uncomfortable seat continues to be the most coveted item in House of the Dragon where it will be the reason for a bloody civil war among the Targaryens. But not all Targaryens have their eye on ruling Westeros, as Matt Smith suggests.

We already know that Matt Smith is playing the possibly unhinged Daemon Targaryen but does the brother of the King want to take over the Iron Throne? The former Doctor Who star revealed Daemon's true intentions in the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off show.

Matt Smith recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about House of the Dragon where he referred to the old saying about gods flipping a coin whenever a Targaryen is born. "It hasn't quite hit the ground yet," Smith said of Daemon's fabled coin. "And until it's final doom, [we won't] find out which side he's on."

Daemon's volatility is something to watch out for in House of the Dragon and it is something that the character shares with his fearsome dragon Caraxes. "He's like a huge rabid dog, in many ways, who only calms and soothes around Daemon," Smith said of Caraxes. "He's almost an untrainable dragon in many respects."

But what does Daemon truly want? Does he have his eye on the Iron Throne? Smith says it might not be that simple as he believes his character is constantly "flipping sides" in the series.

"I don't think it's about an ambition to the throne and all that," he said. "I think a lot of it is about his brother."

We're not sure what Daemon's issues are with his brother Viserys I Targaryen, who will be played by Paddy Considine in the show. Still, this could be a relationship with a lot of friction.

House of the Dragon premieres on HBO on August 21, 2022.
