Gwen Stefani tried her luck in acting almost two decades ago. The singer would have probably been known as an actress had Angelina Jolie not beaten her in landing this iconic acting role.

Gwen Stefani appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday. When she joined the host on its Burning Questions segment, one of the questions led Blake Shelton's wife to recount the time she tried her luck to be an actress.
"What movie role have you auditioned for that people would be surprised to know?" DeGeneres asked the Rich Girl singer.
"Mr. & Mrs. Smith," Stefani responded. "Angelina beat me."

"Wow, that could have gone a whole different way," DeGeneres responded. "It could have been a different story," Stefani smiled as she chimed in.
It wasn't actually the first time Stefani opened up about her audition for the movie. In 2016, she told Howard Stern that felt that she was near to getting the role.
"I feel like I almost got it. I went to a bunch [of auditions]. [It was] very competitive and I wanted to do it, but I wanted to do music more," Stefani was quoted by Daily Mail as saying.
Stefani added that she and her husband at the time, Gavin Rossdale, already knew Brad Pitt, the leading man in the action movie. In 2008, Stefani once again talked about the role that got away.
"It was between me and Angelina Jolie, and I'm like, 'Oh, great. I got a shot here,'" she told Vogue. "The whole acting thing really feels like something I could do. Whenever I've done it, whenever I had moments where it works, it's just like performing. You hit a moment. And that's what movies are: a series of moments."

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt fell in love shortly after they met on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. If the role was offered to Gwen Stefani, many wondered if the romance between Pitt and Jolie would have materialized.
Also, it's unlikely Pitt and Stefani would date because, at the time, she was with her first husband Rossdale. As Stefani mentioned, she and her ex-husband seemed to be in the same social circle as Pitt.
Jolie and Pitt have been together for 12 years. They wed in 2014 but split two years later. Justin Sylvester, one of the hosts of E! News Daily Pop, believed that regardless if Jolie played the role in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, she and Pitt were meant to be together at some point in their lives.
"Unfortunately, those two were meant to be together somehow", E! News Daily Pop host Justin Sylvester said referring to Pitt and Jolie. "I was just gonna say they were going to find each other like at some point," one of his co-hosts agreed.
Meanwhile, Stefani and Rossdale eventually divorced. The No Doubt singer is now happily married to Blake Shelton.
