A previous box office projection from Boxoffice Pro suggested that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be earning between $120 to $155 million on its opening weekend.
Should this projection live up to reality, Vol. 3 is set to raise Marvel’s numbers back up, as well as surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy’s ($94.3M) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s ($146.5M) records!
However, according to Deadline, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is, as of writing, on its way to earn $14M to $17.5M in previews on Thursday night.
While this already serves as a great start amongst most movies, it’s lagging behind from 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s record, $17M on its preview night.
Over the next three days, Vol. 3 is expected to earn between $110M and $130M, all the while receiving the lowest reviews at 78% fresh (as opposed to Vol. 2 with 85% certified fresh and Vol. 1’s 92%).
In spite of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 earning the longest runtime for its trilogy record, the film would have to do better on their box office earnings soon enough to break even as James Gunn’s last MCU project.

It remains to be seen for now if Gunn’s return to helm another Guardians film would be highly dependent on its box office earnings.
Considering that Gunn was previously sacked from Marvel on account of his past problematic tweets, leading him to become DC Studios’ co-CEO alongside Peter Safran.
It is worth mentioning though that no matter what happens, Gunn is more than willing to take in his Guardians stars over to DC for a different project, so as to keep the gang together.
This may or may not be the last time we’ll see the Guardians together in the MCU. Who knows?
As the WGA strikers continue to fight for their rights, there may still be room for spinoff stories in the future.
