Aside from the band of misfits coming together, Guardians of the Galaxy is known for its iconic musical scoring with the classic hits that Star-Lord listens to. However, this time, a new composer enters the MCU scene for Vol. 3 and he is from The Suicide Squad, John Murphy, making it another collaboration with him and writer and director James Gunn.

James Gunn had a chat with CinemaBlend wherein he shared the news of having John Murphy as the new composer of the third installment of Guardians. "I'm going to have to go listen to some music that John Murphy wrote that we're going to be playing during the movie. … I guess I'm spoiling the fact that John Murphy is doing the score for Guardians. So you guys got a scoop."

This is not the first time John Murphy worked with James Gunn. He made the jump from DC to the MCU as they already collaborated for the musical scoring of the latest DCEU film, The Suicide Squad, written and directed by Gunn. Murphy will be replacing Tyler Bates who did the scoring of the first two Guardians films.

The Guardians of the Galaxy films have the reputation of having greats sets of songs and it is more often than not found on the mixtapes of Peter Quill. As for the work of Murphy, Gunn praised him for what he did to The Suicide Squad, "You probably know that John wrote huge sections of the score before we were shooting."

Gunn added, "So we shot to those sections of the score. We go through the script, and we already know where all the songs are in the movie. And then we go through the script and we point out the main sections that will need score beforehand."

Gunn also pointed out various scenes, even comparing Murphy's work to some kind of routine, "While Daniela Melchior is giving her speech, I've got the music in my ears, so that it is almost like she's performing like a William Shatner-esque poetry-to-music (routine). All of that stuff is planned out."

As the story of the Guardians progress, James Gunn has big plans for Peter Quill and his music as he has been given a Zune which would have more than 300 songs inside of it. Surely, John Murphy already has a plan on what songs would be included therein.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premieres in theaters on May 5, 2023. The Suicide Squad will be available on DVDD/ Blu-Ray on October 26, 2021 so be sure to get your own copy and listen to the song selection of John Murphy, you'll never know what they could put in the Zune of Peter Quill. It could literally be anything.
