Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Will Take a Different Approach from the First Run

Sequels have worked time and again, when the formula is built up on rather than repeated for another round.

We've seen this in the case of Captain America, and perhaps to an extent, that in Thor. And from the looks of it, director James Gunn is continuing the tradition for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Gunn spoke with USA Today to revealed a few things that will make this run different, starting with an adorable but surprisingly annoying Groot—at least for two of the Guardians.

"The first movie was successful because we took chances and gave people the unexpected. This movie can only really be what it is, Guardians can only be what they are, if they're taking a risk. It means giving them a much different movie."

To do this, Gunn revealed that the movie will deliver bigger and newer facets, including new sci-fi concepts and alien worlds. Obviously, there will be new people, too, starting with the arrival of Star-Lord's father, Ego, portrayed by Kurt Russell).

Between the father-son reunion and space fights, there's also Groot who becomes a baby. Two of the Guardians don't know how to handle him—we all know who those could be—but the other two act as the better Guardians: Rocket as his best friend and Gamora as the reasonable woman in the group.

There will also be relationships in different forms, all of which are just as complicated as the story itself. A step-sister fight, an unlikely trio team-up, and a friendship between unexpected allies—and just like that, we're pretty sure Gunn has a lot up his sleeve to give us a new way to feel good about the GotG movie. If anything, we'll be seeing progress by way of relationships and interactions, so we can delve deeper into what makes these characters oh so interesting.
