Pompeo's exit will align with Meredith's storyline. The doctor has accepted a job in Boston, working on Alzheimer's research.

Hence, she can return anytime to Grey Sloan, just like other original stars who have left and guest-starring in the series.

In the Grey's Anatomy Season 19 Part 2 episode, Meredith can be seen walking on the halls of Grey Sloan. Though it's her last day at the hospital, she can't hide her excitement for the new life that awaits her and her family in Boston.

"It's been a lot," she says. "A fire… moving."

Meredith Grey's Move to Boston

Earlier in the season, Meredith learned that the anxiety of her oldest daughter, Zola (Aniela Gumbs), stemmed from the fact that she's gifted.

This puts everything in place for Pompeo's Grey's Anatomy Season 19 exit.
