Rila Fukushima in The Wolverine

The Wolverine and Arrow star Rila Fukushima will reportedly join Scarlett Johansson in Dreamworks Pictures' adaptation of the classic Cyberpunk manga/anime Ghost in the Shell.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Japanese actress has joined the cast, but details about her role are still being kept underwraps. The live-action Ghost in the Shell film will center on Johansson's special ops cyborg "The Major", who leads an elite task for called Section 9.

Fukushima and Johansson will star alongside Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire), and Takeshi Kitano (Battle Royale), who plays Major's boss Daisuke Aramaki.

The Tokyo-born actress is best known for her role as Yukio in 2013's The Wolverine, and she also played Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana for the third season of Arrow.

The film has faced criticism for "whitewashing" the role of Motoko Kusunagi. It even faced more criticism when producers reportedly were testing visual effects to make Scarlett Johansson look more Asian. Despite its criticisms in the West, it seems that the Japanese fans and the Ghost in the Shell publisher itself are open to Scarlett taking the role of Motoko.

Ghost in the Shell is set to release on March 31, 2017.
