It has been over a decade since the novel series ended, and now, Full Metal Panic! is confirmed to get a sequel that’s set 20 years after the original story’s ending.

This upcoming sequel was announced recently by Kadokawa, and this new story is made to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

While this isn’t exactly a sequel to Full Metal Panic! anime series, it should still be a treat for fans of the franchise as it brings back the main duo.

Full Metal Panic! began as a series of light novels published between 1998 and 2011. Though the series truly became popular when an anime adaptation was released.

The first anime season was made by studio Gonzo and aired in 2002. It quickly became one of the anime icons of the 2000s as its combination of mecha action and high school comedy proved to be a great combo.

Since then, the series has received several seasons, as well as a variety of manga spin-offs.

Among the four TV seasons of the anime are Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu and Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid which were animated by the renowned studio Kyoto Animation (of Clannad and Violet Evergarden fame).

The latest anime in the series is titled Invisible Victory. Instead of Kyoto Animation returning though, the anime was made by Xebec, the studio behind Love Hina and To Love Ru.

Currently, the anime adaptations have yet to tell the full story. This means fans who want to read the upcoming sequel should be familiar with what happened in the novel series.

Kadokawa announced this upcoming Full Metal Panic! sequel earlier today, and the publisher also revealed some interesting details about it.

Specifically, this sequel will once again follow Sosuke Sagara and Kaname Chidori, albeit 20 years after the novel series’ end. This means the new story will follow the two’s family life.

Creator Shoji Gatoh also noted that the story will be a collection of shorts, though he did not mention how long the sequel will be. He said that it might be just as short as one volume, or it could become a multi-volume work.

This next Full Metal Panic! story’s excerpt is published in Dragon Magazine. Though the first full chapter will be released on July 20 in the same magazine.
