Clannad is a 2007 slice-of-life anime by Kyoto Animation. The series is based on a 2004 visual novel and it follows Tomoya Okazaki, a boy who often skips school and gets in trouble.

Clannad focuses on Tomoya's encounter with Nagisa, a girl who has recently returned to school after a serious illness and dreams of reviving her school's drama club.

Claiming he has nothing better to do, Tomoya decides to help Nagisa and four other girls achieve this goal. As he grows closer to them, learns about their problems, and, eventually, helps them overcome them, Tomoya realizes that life is much more interesting than he thought.

The second season, Clannad: After Story, follows Tomoya and Nagisa's romance and their life as a young married couple and some of the series' supernatural elements are further explored.

How to Watch Clannad in Order

The best way to watch all Clannad media is in the order that they came out.

In total, there are two anime seasons, a movie, and two OVA episodes. Here's the release order:

  • Season 1: Clannad (2007)
  • Clannad The Motion Picture (2007)
  • Season 2: Clannad: After Story (2008)
  • Clannad: Another World, Tomoyo Chapter (2008)
  • Clannad After Story: Another World, Kyou Chapter (2009)

If you would prefer to watch in chronological, rather than release order, then you can watch Clannad: Another World, Tomoyo Chapter right after Season 1 of the main anime.

In general, the OVA episodes can both be watched after Season 1, though it might be a good idea to watch them after Clannad: After Story, as you'll be so much more attached to the characters by then.

Finally, you can watch or skip the movie depending on how much time you can devote, as it doesn't significantly expand the story and a large part of it is a Season 1 recap.
