The Frieren anime continues to enjoy both popularity and critical acclaim, though the praise isn’t just for the anime. That’s because Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End took home the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award alongside three other winners.
This is also yet another feather on Frieren’s cap as the series has already gotten several prestigious awards since it began serialization.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Gets Another Prestigious Award
Following the anime’s premiere back in late September 2023, Madhouse’s Frieren became a huge hit, enough that it quickly became one of the most popular shows of the Fall 23 season.
As the show’s first season continues in the ongoing Winter 24 season, interest in the manga also continues to increase. In fact, the manga’s circulation has increased to 17 million thanks to the anime.
Soon, the manga will likely get another boost as Shogakukan announced that Frieren is among the four winning titles of its annual manga award.
To celebrate the series’ win, the manga’s official X (formerly Twitter) shared a post announcing the win alongside an illustration of Himmel the Hero.
In previous years, Frieren has gotten several major awards. First, it won the 14th Manga Taisho in 2021. During the same year, the manga was also awarded the New Creator Prize at the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.
Frieren took home a prize alongside three other notable manga. What’s interesting is that this latest edition of the award no longer features four categories.

69th Shogakukan Manga Award Shares Complete List of Winners
Previously, awards were split into four categories: General, Shonen, Shojo, and Children’s.
These categories have been removed for the 69th award to reflect how manga are being read across generations and genders, regardless of what genre they’re classified as.
The other winners of the award include Trillion Game, the ongoing manga by Riichiro Inagaki that was confirmed to have an anime adaptation by Madhouse in the works. It also got a live-action TV drama in 2023.
Next is The Elusive Samurai, the Shonen Jump manga by Yusei Matsui (of Assassination Classroom fame). This manga is also getting an anime adaptation this year, and it is being produced by CloverWorks.
The last manga to receive an award is Suuji de Asobo by Murako Kinuta. This series follows a man who aims to become a university professor but finds himself struggling with math.
As with the previous iterations, the winners of the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award will each receive a bronze statue, a certificate, and JPY 1 million (around USD 6,700).
