Warning: This article contains spoilers from the first season of Fate: The Winx Saga.
Fate: The Winx Saga, one of the most popular YA fantasy shows to top Netflix charts, is a coming-of-age story about Bloom (played by Abigail Cowen), a 16-year-old changeling fire fairy who arrives in the Otherworld to join Alfea, the magical school for faeries.
She learns that everything she knew about her family isn't true, leading her on a quest to find out who her true parents are, and where she came from. The show dominated the Netflix charts since its January 22, 2021 release, but with only six episodes, fans are craving for more.
This fantasy Netflix series may not be as high budget as the Harry Potter films, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I watched all six 50-minute episodes within a week even though I almost hesitated to complete it midway through, and now I'm looking forward to watch after the cliffhanger season finale left a bunch of unanswered questions, so if you're wondering if Netflix will release more Fate: The Winx Saga episodes, here's everything you need to know about the fantasy series.
Has Netflix renewed Fate: The Winx Saga for Season 2?
Yes! On February 18, 2021, Netflix has renewed Fate: The Winx Saga for Season 2. This isn't surprising since the show held the #1 spot in Netflix's U.S. Top 10 list for multiple days even though the first season was extremely short with just six 50-minute episodes.
There's also the fact that Fate is based on Winx Club, an Italian animated series that aired on Nickelodeon with more than in the United States with a voice cast that included Ariana Grande, Daniella Monet, and Elizabeth Gillies, so there's a lot of story material the Netflix series can draw from in the upcoming season.
On top of that, Season 1 of Fate ended in a cliffhanger, so it's good to know that Netflix has renewed Fate: The Winx Saga.
How many episodes will Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2 have?
Update: Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2 is now available to stream on Netflix.
Netflix has announced that Season 2 of Fate: The Winx Saga will consist of 8 episodes, 2 more episodes than the first one. Season 1 only consisted of 6 50-minute episodes. Despite the show's short run, the first season was well-paced, and it didn't feel like the series dragged.
The Vampire Diaries creator Brian Young, who will return as showrunner and executive producer for Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2, said this in a statement:
āSeason 1ās six episodes hardly scraped the surface of this tremendously fascinating realm and its strong fairies. Iām excited to discover more about Aisha, Stella, Terra, and Musa as Bloomās narrative progresses. And you never know who will turn up at Alfea the following semester ā
When is the release date for Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2?
During Geeked Week 2022 virtual event, Netflix confirmed that Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2 will be released in Fall 2022.
In July 2022, Netflix released a behind-the-scenes video that revealed that the official release date for Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2 is September 16, 2022. The streamer's schedule of upcoming films and TV shows in September 2022 also includes the show's sophomore season.
Netflix announced the first season of Fate: The Winx Saga on March 2018, but didn't begin filming until September 2019, more than a year before Season 1 premiered. Netflix announced that production for the Season 2 episodes was scheduled in 2021.
Netflix is also known for fast-tracking its timelines when working on new seasons of beloved original shows.
Is there already a trailer for Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2?
On Aug. 23, Netflix released the trailer for Fate: The Winx Saga Season 2, which you can watch below:
What would Season 2 of Fate: The Winx Saga be about?
A lot of things happened at the last episode of Season 1: Bloom unlocks a new level of her fairy powers, showing her transforming with fiery fairy wins and taking down an army of Burned Ones in the process. Bloom also reveals to her parents that she is a changeling, a fairy that switched at birth with their human baby, and they appear to accept her
The most shocking part of the final episode of Season 1 is when Roslaind ā the villainous manipulative former headmistress of Alfeaābrutally kills Headmistress Farah Dowling and takes over the school with the help of the Queen of Solaria and her army. Saul Silva (played by Robert James Collier) was arrested for "attempted murder", and the Queen reveals that Sky's father, Andreas, has secretly been alive all these years, hiding and raising Rosalind's loyal teenage henchwoman, Beatrix.
Rosalind explains who the Burned Ones are, and how they are connected to Bloom. Before killing Dowling, she told her:
"There's a legend. It's a thousand years old. That's how old the Burned Ones are, by the way. They were soldiers from an ancient war. The legend is about the magic used against them. It created them. It's powerful. It's primal. The Dragon Flame. It burns inside our changeling friend."
Cowen, who plays Bloom, recently had an interview with TheWrap, and she talked about how Season 1 was just the beginning. "That's just kind of a little teaser into what her powers are going to be. And hopefully for the second season, if we get a second season, I think that's just the beginning of them. I think that's why we waited until the very end to tease and show the audienceālike, get ready, this is about to get very intense," she said.
Season 1 of Fate left a lot of unanswered questions: Is Dowling really dead? Who are Bloom's parents? How will the relationship between Sky and his father develop? Will they explore other places in the Otherworld? How will Bloom and her friends fight Rosalind, the Queen of Solaria, and her armies?
Which classic Winx character will appear in Season 2?
Cowen also revealed in a recent interview with The Wrap that if the show is renewed for Season 2, they might introduce a beloved fairy from the original cartoons, Flora. In the Netflix series, Flora and Tecna were replaced by an entirely new earth fairy Terra, whom the showrunner Brian Young explained is a cousin of Flora.
In the cartoons, Flora is depicted as a young tan-skinned Latina with long light-brown hair. Her friends usually rely on her for potions and magic advice.
Some fans were upset about the exclusion of Flora in Season 1, as well as the overall casting of the show. They also pointed out how the whitewashing of some characters like Musa, who was originally depicted as East Asian in the cartoons but is played by an actress who appears to be white in Netflix's Fate.
Cowen talked about the casting concerns in her interview with TheWrap,"If we are lucky enough to get a second season, I think Flora would be brought in and I would definitely welcome that. I'm not a part of the casting process, but I do think, if the series does go to a second season, I think hopefully these concerns are something that can be addressed, because I do think diversity both in front of and behind the camera is vital and much-needed throughout the industry and internationally. So I think it's important that we are having these conversations."
In June 2022, Netflix shared a first look at Paulina Chavez as Flora:
What has the cast said about Season 2, and who else will join?
Season 2 has been renewed, so most of the main cast will probably return. However, Netflix hasn't confirmed any new actors joining the cast. The cast of Season 1 already talked about their hopes for Season 2.
Speaking to BriefTake, Elisha Applebaum explained how she's planning to tweak her approach to playing mind fairy Musa. "It was a very strange period in which I thought Musa listened to rock music. And I thought that it would be really heavy music and that she wouldn't have to think about anything else but listening to this wild music," Applebaum said. "But then when you watch it, it's obviously very calm and sort of meditative music, which would also make a lot of sense. If there's going to be a season two, that is definitely something I will have to remember and take into that, because she softens up throughout."
When Beatrix, who plays the villainous Beatrix, was asked by 1883 Magazine if Season 2 has already been confirmed, she said, "I hope so! I hope if there is, we get to find out a bit more about Beatrix's past because I'd love to know what happens.
In August 2021, Paulina Chavez has been cast to play Flora, the fairy of nature from the planet Lynphea that draws her power from plants. She comes into the show after recently playing the lead in another Netflix show, The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia. Her role as a teen science prodigy earned her a nomination for an Imagen Foundation Award.
Will Fate: The Winx Saga reveal Bloom's parents?
If Season 2 follows the original Nickelodeon Winx Club cartoon, we might find out that Bloom's biological parents are Oritel and Marion, the king and queen of the Domino realm. Fate hasn't hinted about this yet, and since the Netflix series is loosely based on the animation, they might change Bloom's parents, but it's likely that Bloom still has royal ancestry in the show.
