The Star Wars franchise fans are already expressing unhappiness with the upcoming Star Wars: The Acolyte TV show based on what they saw from the first trailer.

Disney recently released the first trailer for its Disney+ TV series, Star Wars: The Acolyte. The series stars The Matrix alumnus Carrie-Anne Moss and South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae of Squid Game fame.

The trailer showed a glimpse of the High Republic era, where the Jedi thrived, and the Sith supposedly became extinct. An investigation into a series of crimes specifically targeting Jedi leads into a showdown with a mysterious lone figure with inexplicable powers of the Force.

The short preview also showcased martial arts scenes that are reminiscent of a younger Moss as Trinity, along with the franchise's staple lightsaber battles. Despite these impressive displays of technical prowess, it appears that some fans are displeased with the teaser.

In a thread on Reddit, user TheTommohawkTom put forth two theories for the fan outrage. The first theory is that fans have already been displeased by earlier statements by the show’s executive producer, Leslye Headland, and they channeled that anger over to their perception of the show.

TheTommoHawkTom also attributed this disappointment to a minority of the fanbase that takes offense whenever a person of color gets a lead role in a franchise traditionally headlined by white personalities.

User Sargentrock, on the other hand, opined that some fans just read too much into trailers. At the same time, Sacsay1 believes that this is the result of people being unable to shake off their headcanon, which developed due to the secrecy surrounding Disney’s upcoming Star Wars projects.

Star Wars: The Acolyte will premiere with two episodes on Disney+ on June 4.
