After sharing a teaser trailer and several visuals back in March, we finally have our first look at the Evangelion Beyond stage play after official rehearsal footage was shared online.

Ahead of the play’s premiere last May 6, members of the Japanese press were given a chance to watch and record clips of the play’s dress rehearsal.

Soon after, these publications shared some snippets of the rehearsal online.

With this, Evangelion fans can finally get a sense of what to expect given that the previous teasers were cryptic in nature.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is easily one of the most iconic anime of all time thanks to its memorable characters, unique atmosphere, and deep themes.

While it has been decades since the original anime series ended, the Evangelion franchise has continued to get new projects, including the Rebuild of Evangelion remake movie series.

The latest project in the franchise is the Evangelion Beyond stage play, though it is unlike many other anime-based stage productions.

While most other anime stage plays have stories that are straight adaptations of their source material, Evangelion Beyond is different as it features an all-new story with a different cast of characters.

This means the play is unrelated to the anime. In fact, aside from the EVA mechs, the play does not seem like it’s based on the Evangelion franchise at all.

Still, the EVAs here look very much like the ones in the anime, so it should make for an interesting watch for series fans.

The Evangelion play began its run last May 6. But for those who are not yet convinced if they should watch it, new footage from the dress rehearsal was shared by various Japanese publications.

Here, fans can watch how the play recreates the EVAs on stage. The footage also shows the huge creature that serves as the analog for the Angels in the anime.

Check out the footage here:

While the anime sees the EVA mechs go up against Angels from space, in this stage play, the EVAs must face the mysterious "Ikimono" creature that came from beneath the Earth.

Evangelion Beyond runs from May 6 to 28, 2023, at the THEATER MILANO-Za in Tokyo.

Currently, there’s no word on plans for an international production or a streaming release of this play.
