Neon Genesis Evangelion has always been an unusual series, but this new stage play might just be the strangest project in the series yet. Recently, a new key visual and teaser for the Evangelion Stage Play were released, and it’s seriously weird, even for Eva standards.

The visual and teaser for the stage play were shared on Bunkamura’s official pages.

Aside from detailing the cast and premise, the new info also features an intriguing peek at what to expect.

Anime stage play adaptations are nothing new, with hit titles like Spy x Family and Attack on Titan even getting musical stage plays.

In fact, the Oshi no Ko manga has a whole story arc about a stage adaptation like this.

While most theatrical adaptations follow the story of the anime or manga closely, it seems that this Evangelion play is a major departure from its source material.

Instead of starring the iconic characters Shinji, Asuka, and Rei, the play introduces new characters which you can see in this teaser video:

Bunkamura also detailed the play’s premise. Officially titled Evangelion Beyond, this play will also deal with the repercussions of the Angels’ attack on Earth, and it will follow a different organization called Mensch.

Much like NERV, Mensch is also an organization that develops Evangelion units. This means several members of the main cast are Eva pilots while others are members of the Mensch organization.

Evangelion Play’s Weird New Visual

The new teaser video featured a rundown of the main cast in futuristic sci-fi clothes.

While it wasn’t clear if these outfits will be what they’ll wear in the play, the visual confirmed that this will indeed be their attire.

Along with their outfits, the visual also shows the main cast holding up what seem to be black/white spheres.

This is quite confusing even for longtime Eva fans given that this style isn’t synonymous with the franchise.

Overall, the Evangelion Beyond play seems strange given how far its visual style is from the anime. After all, there are no iconic plugsuits in sight.

Still, the teaser and the visual are quite interesting. They also feel weird and a bit alien, just like Evangelion does during its many “out there” moments.

The Evangelion Beyond Stage Play will run from May 6-28 in Tokyo at the Theater Milano-Za.
