Robert Jordan's epic fantasy series Wheel of Time is finally getting a TV adaptation as the project that's been in development since 2000 is moving forward with Sony, Variety reports.

The series will be based on the books by Robert Jordan, the pen name of James O. Rigney Jr. There are over 14 novels, three of which were completed by Brandon Sanderson. The series of books started with The Eye of the World in 1990 and ended with A Memory of Light, which Sanderson completed after Sanderson passed away in 2017. The books follow a quest to find the Dragon Reborn, who it is said will help unite forces to fight The Dark One. Here's the synopsis for the series:

Robert Jordan'sWheel of Timeis a story that takes place both in our past and our future. In his fantasy world, the Dark One, the embodiment of pure evil, is breaking free from his prison. The overall plot is about a man who learns that he is the reincarnation of the world's messiah and is once again destined to save the world from the Dark One -- but possibly destroy it in the process. This saga is not only his story, but the story of an entire world's struggle to deal with war and change, destruction and hope.

Rafe Judkins will serve as Executive Producer and Writer for the series. He's the guy behind TV shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Hemlock Grove, and NBC's Chuck.

The last time we heard about this project was last April, when the widow of Jordan, Harriet McDougal, said, "Legal issues have been resolved. The Wheel of Time will become a cutting edge TV series! I couldn't be more pleased. Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio."

Back in February 2015, a pilot episode titled Winter Dragon aired on FXX at 1:30 a.m. with no prior publicity. After the episode aired on TV, McDougal said in a statement that she didn't know anything about the project being produced.
