Alaqua Cox made her MCU debut in the Marvel mini-series, Hawkeye, where she went up against Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) in her surge for revenge.

Now that the Echo series will finally be debuting by January next year, here's an ultimate character bio to see who we're seeing on Disney Plus soon.

Maya Lopez aka Echo is a deaf martial artist whose strong suit came from expertly reading other people's lips. Since she was a kid, she had been closely attached to her father, William Lopez, who was the Tracksuit Mafia commander.

One of the reasons for their close relationship is largely rooted in how her father always looked after her, ensuring she would know how to fight on her own despite her disability.

Because of this, she attended Brooklyn Karate Academy when she was a kid, which eventually led her to join the Tracksuit Mafia to strengthen her training.

Once she was all grown up, she unfortunately had to witness the death of her father right in front of her eyes. A masked Ronin drove a sword through him, fueling Maya's thirst for revenge.

And this is where her story began.

Marvel's heroes commonly have cosmic-based powers, and Echo is no different. In the comics, Maya is said to have photographic reflexes and superhuman physicality.

Despite her disability, she is a cosmic force to be reckoned with. Her powers and abilities are of the same level as Black Widow's Taskmaster.

Basically, Echo's photographic reflexes allow her to perfectly replicate her opponents' physical movements, fighting, and combat style which also means having instant proficiency in wielding a variety of weapons and martial arts skills.

However, as seen in Hawkeye and the Echo crew team themselves, Maya won't be having the same exact superpowers in her debut series.

In a recent interview with Comicbook, Echo executive producer and director Sydney Freeland teased how Echo's powers in her solo series won't be the same ones we've encountered in the Marvel comics:

I think in talking with the executives and our approach, and when building visual style, it was sort of like, 'Oh yeah, lean into that, lean into that... Yeah, so her power in the comic books is that she can copy anything, any movement, any whatever. It's kind of lame. I will say that is not her power [in the show], and I'll just kind of leave it at that."

As you might have guessed, her weakness would lie in her deafness and vision, in which case, if she doesn't read the lips of her opponents or if her vision altogether was compromised, then she'd be stuck in a vulnerable spot.

Is Echo a Good Guy or a Villain in the MCU?

Echo's MCU counterpart is working for the bad guys, specifically under Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio). This was all due to her thirst to hunt down the Ronin who killed her father, whom she believed to be Clint Barton.

In the Hawkeye series, Clint pointed fingers by saying that Black Widow already killed the Ronin that Echo was looking for.

While it wasn't entirely true, it's somewhat a metaphor for how Natasha was the only Avenger who pulled Clint out of his dark persona back in Avengers: Endgame.

Now, Echo did allegedly 'kill' Kingpin after learning the truth behind her father's death. Despite being raised as Fisk's adoptive daughter, she pulled the trigger.

In the same interview, Freeland confirmed that the titular character is a villain even though she won't have the same powers as she did in the comics:

"We wanted something that, again, if you're coming off of Hawkeye, and you have to keep in mind she's a villain. She's a villain. And so tonally, we wanted to lean into that."

Then again, we might be able to see the whole picture once the actual Echo series debuts in 2024.

Does Echo End Up With Daredevil?

Remember when we first met Kingpin? Yep, you guessed it. D'Onofrio first played the role opposite of Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock aka Daredevil in the Netflix series.

Daredevil has been quite the charmer even way before making his MCU debut in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

He has had his own love interest in the Netflix Show, Deborah Ann Woll's Karen Page, and the next with Tatiana Maslany's She-Hulk aka Jennifer Walters. But it doesn't stop there.

Marvel Comics pinned down their love story, which all began when Kingpin set up the two on a blind date. At the time, Murdock had just lost the love of his life, Karen, which led to Fisk taking advantage of his vulnerable state.

Thus, this is where Maya comes in.

Fisk tricked Maya into thinking that it was Murdock who murdered her father. This led Echo to fight against him for a while.

And on the second fight, it was only then that Daredevil revealed his secret identity to her, which made her realize that her father figure manipulated her.

Maya shot Kingpin and left New York to find herself, ending her relationship with Daredevil. The two eventually teamed up again, after Echo had had her fill in helping the Avengers.

Seeing as Charlie Cox has been confirmed to also star in the Echo series ahead of his own reboot in Daredevil: Born Again, it would be interesting how their dynamic would play out once the Disney Plus series is available to stream.

The most that we've seen Echo in action was in Hawkeye, which doesn't give off everything we had to know about Maya, but enough to call it an official introduction to the character in the billion-dollar franchise.

As for elements on how much her origin story would differ in the MCU via her TV series, well, it remains to be seen for now, which would pave the way for this show to welcome her into the Marvel Universe.

With Wilson Fisk also seen in the trailer of the Echo series, we'll most likely be seeing how he raised Echo in replacement of when she lost her biological father to Ronin.

Not to mention, a deeper connection to the character when it comes to her strengths and weaknesses, and quite possibly, unveil more of her powers that we have yet to see from her.
