DICE had just released their Scarif update for Star Wars Battlefront II, and with that they have also announced that they are pulling the plug for live service to the game. With the end of Battlefront, a lot of fans are hopeful for a sequel in the works, but it seems like EA has no current plans.
According to the Bespin Bulletin on IG, there is no active development going on for a Battlefront III, and if it were to come out, we'll have to wait a very long time for it. They write:
From what I've been hearing there is no Battlefront III. Most of the team at DICE working on Battlefront II will be shifted to Battlefield 2021, a game that EA are determined to make a return to form following the disappointing Battlefield V in 2018 and as I have exclusively reported in the past, EA's next two Star Wars games are EA Motive's combat flight simulator—Project Maverick releasing in 2021, in 2022 we will see the sequel to Respawn's Jedi: Fallen Order and in 2023 the deal between EA and Lucasfilm comes to an end.
Of course, it's still possible for Lucasfilm and EA to come to a new agreement, but even if that did take place, we would have to wait until 2024 or 2025 to get it.
For now, players are definitely bummed that DICE would pull out when the game is now at its best state. There was still so much cosmetics and maps to add, and with the renewed player base, it feels like a mistake to suddenly quit when they were finally ahead.
If a third Battlefront were to happen though, I'm hopeful that whoever is developing it will finally learn from the mistakes of Battlefront II and deliver us a game that everyone will be pleased with. Then again, these are Star Wars fans we're talking about, so you definitely can't please everyone.
Star Wars Battlefront II is now playable for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
