Dracula Won’t Just Be in Dark Universe, TV Also in the Works

Universal may not have gotten the warm reception that it hoped for The Mummy since its debut, but that hasn't scrapped any plans for the Dark Universe project yet.

If you're one of those who absolutely didn't like The Mummy, but feel that other movies, like Dracula should be shown onscreen, then this may be a bit of good news. According to Variety, a Dracula TV series may be in the pipeline.

That's not the only bit of good news, as the creative team tagged with the project is none other than those behind BBC's Sherlock. This means that Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat will be spearheading the writing arm of the project, while Sue Vertue's Hartswood Films will produce.

There are no details for this yet, but it's supposed to be a take on Bram Stoker's Dracula. What's more, the format will follow Sherlock's mini-series, feature-length run, which I don't think anyone has an issue with, except perhaps all the possibilities for cliffhangers.

So far, the project appears to still be in the planning phase. Both Gatiss and Moffat are still tied to their own projects, but talks have begun with BBC, supposedly for the broadcast rights in the U.K.

Now, the speculation is on whether it will be a modernized Dracula, in the same way that Sherlock's cases were reimagined in modern-day Britain. My concern is how exactly this will be adapted into a series. Sherlock was brilliant, if only because it was already written to be episodic (look at all those case files left unexplored!) and putting an eccentric detective in the modern age isn't really that hard to accomplish with a good twist.
