Doctor Strange’s Director Talks Score, Inspiration & Villain Role

Just before Doctor Strange hits cinemas, fans were treated to Reddit Ask and Answer session care of director Scott Derrickson.

Here, he hints at some of the highlights of the movie, starting with other inspirations that the movie took from. While we all know that there are some visual influences from Steve Ditko and the original comics. But Derrickson revealed that the movie also took from the likes of Escher, Dali, surrealist photography, and most importantly, their own imaginations.

Derrickson also shared a little about his own thoughts when it came to how he had formed the villain Kaecilius.

"What I wanted was a villain driven by a compelling agenda. He is a man of ideas he has cogent, defendable point of view, which is what I always find interesting in antagonists and villains."

Beside Mikkelsen's Kaecilius, Derrickson also talked a little about what they had done for the score of Doctor Strange. Without going into specific details, Derrickson revealed that he and Giacchino did something "special" so that the score would be, as he described it, "phenomenal."

What's more, he also shared a pretty nice thing that happened during recording at Abbey Road Studios. And this was basically him getting to see Paul McCartney walk in, shake Derrickson's hand, and listened to one of their recording stints.

As far as what we can expect of the movie as a whole, Derrickson described his feelings of watching the final cut as "deeply satisfying."

"A filmmaker cannot depend upon critical reviews or box office for satisfaction—even if they are good. The only true reward for any artist is to pick a worthy target and hit it. when you know you've hit your target, that is everything. On this one, I hit my target."

I think gives us a good teaser and promise of what we'll be seeing in cinemas. I myself am very excited for the movie. I know trailers are not a lot to go by given recent events, but after Marvel's hit after hit of good movies, this may also be a good hit for me.

Doctor Strange will be out in theaters on Oct. 23.
