Doctor Strange 2 Writer Teases America Chavez Standalone Movie

Alongside Benedict Cumberbatch's titular hero and MCU vet Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, fans were also thrilled with Xochitl Gomez's debut in the MCU as America Chavez in the highly-anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With the mega-franchise going around the Multiverse arc, Chavez’s ability to travel across different universes will surely be valuable in the future. While the new character’s future is unknown, luckily, it looks like Marvel Studios has more plans ahead for the MCU newcomer.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness head writer Michael Waldron opens up about Xochitl Gomez's America Chavez and her future in the MCU.

In the film, one plot hole that baffled the fans is a scene featuring Chavez's two mothers. When Chavez accidentally opened up a portal into the other universe, her two moms were accidentally transported into an unknown universe, leaving their fate unknown.

When asked whether this was part of the plan and if he collaborated with other Marvel writers, "Yeah, that's definitely me collaborating with Marvel and with Sam," Waldron responded. "Really, that is as much about trying to drive America's story in this film, as it is attempting to set up a mystery to be solved in the future. She's somebody without a family. That's what she's searching for."

"And that's what she finds—surprisingly—in our Doctor Strange and Wong. She finds a home in Kamar-Taj at the end. When it's all said and done, it looks kind of tidy. We also set up the next chapter in the America Chavez story," the writer added.

When asked if the storyline about Chavez's mothers were there from the start, Waldron admitted that it would be unraveled "when you're getting into America's solo outing," which seemingly confirms that an America Chavez standalone project is currently in development. Waldron says:

"Getting into the real specificity of her with her parents came a little bit later in the process. It felt, at least to me initially, that maybe we should hold some of that back. It felt like the sort of stuff you'd rather answer when you're getting into America's solo outing. But as we continued to build the story, we found that we wanted to know more about her. And, really, Strange would want to know more about her. It was just honest to their relationship and conversations."

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ conclusion shows America Chavez being trained in Kamar-Taj to be a sorcerer like Wong and Strange, which clearly implies that we will no longer see a chaotic Chavez in the future MCU projects. And with the Multiversal arc currently going on, the MCU heroes would certainly need her help to travel across different universes.

Aside from that, back in 2019, a report from Geeks Worldwide claims that Marvel Studios is developing a Disney+ project centered on America Chavez. Yet, for now, Marvel hasn't yet announced anything related to the new character.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now showing in theaters worldwide.
