WARNING: This article contains minor spoilers on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
After defeating Thanos at the end of Avengers: Endgame, MCU fans have been wondering about the next big threat that their favorite heroes are going to face. Right now, we still haven't gotten a bigger picture regarding their plans for the next big threat since we're still early on in Phase Four. However, it looks like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has actually set up the next threat that the MCU heroes are going to face soon.
Speaking with Murphy's Multiverse, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron was asked about what the next big threat in the MCU is going to be to which he revealed that it's going to involve the multiverse, which we were able to get an extensive look at in the recent film.
"And there’s the threat. And it’s out there and now it’s out there. There’s a Multiversal threat," he said. "In the same way that when the MCU first went cosmic many years ago, there was the teed up threat of Thanos. Now it’s probably a matter of, you’re setting up some Multiversal threats on the board. Whether it’s Kang, Incursions, whatever. It’ll be interesting to see how all those things come together."
For several months, MCU fans have been speculating about the possibility of having a Secret Wars film given that they are leaning towards the multiverse aspect which would lead to more possibilities on what they can explore in the franchise and what kind of threat they can introduce with.
It's not surprising to hear that the multiverse will be the next big threat in the MCU given how they introduced the concept in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Perhaps the "incursion" that they introduced in the mid-credits scene of the recent film is a clue about the growing threat. It would be curious to see how they will address that in the future of the MCU.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now showing in theaters everywhere.
