To Your Eternity isn't a romance anime, but there's a fairly large cast of characters, which means some fan-favorite couples are inevitable. No story is sadder and more tender than Gugu's, so, do Gugu and Rean get together in To Your Eternity?

Do Gugu and Rean Get Together in To Your Eternity?
Gugu and Rean do not officially get together in To Your Eternity. But the way their story builds up, they are more or less considered a couple, even with all the heartbreak this entails, with this being To Your Eternity.
Gugu liked Rean ever since he first met her. That, combined with his innate kindness, leads him to help her several times -- to the point of rescuing her from a falling tree log and becoming disfigured in the process.
After the accident, Gugu starts wearing a helmet to hide his facial disfigurement, so Rean never knows that he was the one to save her until much later, a few moments before his death.
Gugu's crush on her remains strong, but he hides it from her, both because he's insecure about his appearance, and because he's simply a shy pre-teen boy.
When Rean develops a crush, not on Gugu, but on Fushi, Gugu becomes jealous, but he still cannot bring himself to talk to Rean about his feelings.
That is until he accidentally confesses when he gets drunk -- a fact he later forgets.
Rean is too shy and confused to ever bring up Gugu's confession, but she does remember it and often thinks about it the following year, all the more so when her parents arrange a marriage for her.

What Happened to Gugu and Rean?
Throughout the anime, Rean and Gugu argue a lot, but in a teasing, non-aggressive way, and each encourages the other to shift their worldview and grow.
During Rean's birthday party, Nokkers attack, and chaos ensues, with her house being nearly destroyed.
Gugu once again steps in to rescue her, being crushed to death to keep stones from crushing her.
Before Gugu's death, he and Rean have a conversation that finally reveals how he rescued her years ago.
In the aftermath, Fushi, disguised as Gugu, tries to persuade Rean that Gugu is still alive but simply has to go away.
It's not entirely clear if Rean knows about Fushi, but it's heavily implied that she does and that she's heartbroken.

Later on, Rean goes to the spot where she and Gugu were supposed to pick up flowers and tells her father that she is not ready to marry as she is in love with someone who is now gone.
While this could theoretically be Fushi, most fans agree that it would be Gugu. After all, Rean removed Gugu's mask and kissed him before his death, suggesting she wanted to explore a romantic relationship with him too.
To Your Eternity features some of the most heartbreaking anime deaths of all time and, as such, its romance is also mingled with death.
In the end, the cathartic element in Gugu and Rean's relationship could not be found in them getting together, but in her finally figuring out the truth and taking time to mourn him.
