Launched in late 2019, Disney+ is The Walt Disney Company’s streaming service that’s positioned against competing platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max.

While the highlights of Disney+ are the original Marvel and Star Wars shows, the service has been expanding to non-Disney titles, including TV anime such as Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.

This week, Disney announced that it has expanded its partnership with Kodansha.

Thanks to this, existing and upcoming anime produced by Kodansha will be released on Disney’s platform, including the next Tokyo Revengers season.

Disney also announced that it will be the exclusive streaming release partner of the upcoming adaptation of the Phoenix manga by Osamu Tezuka.

In case you didn’t know him, Osamu Tezuka is considered the “Father of Manga” and the equivalent of Walt Disney in Japan as he is the creator of Astro Boy.

While Tezuka is best known for Astro Boy, he has several other popular works, including Princess Knight, Kimba the White Lion, Black Jack, and Buddha.

Tezuka is not only one of the first well-known manga artists, but he is also the inspiration of numerous popular mangaka, including the likes of Monkey Punch, Katsuhiro Otomo, Akira Toriyama, and Naoki Urasawa.

Phoenix is one of Tezuka’s popular works, though it remains unfinished as Tezuka died before being able to complete it.

The manga consists of 12 volumes, with each featuring a self-contained story in different eras.

The upcoming anime series adaptation is entitled Phoenix: Eden17. It is being made by Studio 4°C, the studio behind the Berserk: The Golden Age Arc movie trilogy.

Not a lot of details have been revealed yet about the anime, though it is confirmed to be a sci-fi anime that follows Romi and her partner as they depart Earth for a new life on the planet Eden17.

The Phoenix: Eden17 anime series will be released worldwide (except in China) on Disney+ sometime in 2023, though there’s no word yet on an official release date.
