To further bolster its anime content, Disney announced that it is expanding its Kodansha partnership. Along with this, it was announced that Tokyo Revengers Season 2 will be streamed exclusively on Disney+ early next year.
The expanded partnership between the two media giants was announced by The Hollywood Reporter.
There, details about the expanded partnership were revealed, as well as info on Disney’s anime strategy for its premier subscription service.
Disney and Kodansha Partnership
Disney and Kodansha already have an existing partnership. But in Disney’s Asia-Pacific content showcase held in Singapore, it was revealed that Disney is expanding the partnership to include more anime titles for Disney+.
Disney+ is The Walt Disney Company’s streaming service that competes with the likes of Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max, among others.
Disney’s streaming service was launched in late 2019, and its highlight content includes exclusive Marvel and Star Wars shows, as well as a host of Disney movies.
But the service also offers a wide range of non-Disney content, including an increasing number of anime titles.
Meanwhile, Kodansha is a publishing company in Japan that owns the Shonen Magazine family of publications.
The company holds the rights to lots of popular manga/anime IPs, including Attack on Titan, Fire Force, Vinland Saga, and more.
While the new report went into detail about how Disney sought out this expansion of the partnership to bolster its anime content, there is no specific info yet about which Kodansha titles are coming to Disney+.
What we do know for sure is that the next Tokyo Revengers season will be released on Disney’s streaming service.
Tokyo Revengers Season 2 Disney+ Release Date
In case you’re unfamiliar, Tokyo Revengers is an anime series by Liden Films that’s based on the recently concluded manga of the same name by Ken Wakui.
The anime’s first season consisted of 24 episodes and aired between April to September 2021.
Its follow-up is entitled Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown which was announced last year.
This upcoming season will be based on the Christmas Showdown arc from the manga, though there’s currently no word yet on an episode count for it.
What we do know is that it will be streamed exclusively on Disney+ in most of the world, including Japan. The only exception it seems is China.
Tokyo Revengers Season 2 is set to release in early 2023, though there’s no official release date yet.
