The Walt Disney Studios made a barrage of announcements in its Investor Day last 2020. The investor presentation happened on December 10, 2020, where it had seen a deluge of updates for various projects that the studio has in line. Alongside its announcement for movie projects, the studio has announced the expansion of its streaming service with high-quality content. The studio announced a long list of Disney+ new shows that are set for release in the year 2021 and projects that will also start their production within the year.
Most of the major announcements from the studio were mostly on its streaming service, Disney+. It has been 13 months since Disney launched its streaming service, alongside ESPN+ and Hulu. The performance of the streaming service greatly exceeded the expectations of the studio, which it had laid on its investor day in April 2019.

Disney has seen the performance of its streaming service, as well as the shifting landscape of the industry which was further accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney made major changes in its priorities for its streaming business.

The list of 2021 shows began with WandaVision. It was the first series that was released last January 15, 2021. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprised their roles in the series. The series is based on Marvel characters known as Scarlet Witch and Vision. It takes place after the events from the 2019 Avengers: Endgame. The premise of the series follows Wanda and Vision living the ideal suburban life as they try to conceal their powers. As they start their new decades, encountering television tropes, the couple suspects that things around them are not as they seem.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series was released on March 19, 2021. Marvel characters Sam Wilson or Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes or Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) teamed up for an adventure that puts their skills and abilities to fight against the anarchist group called the Flag-Smashers.
The series was released in May 2021. It is based on an alternate version of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) created a new timeline. It has a mysterious vibe as the god of mischief was brought to the Time Variance Authority after he stole the Tesseract and traveled through time to alter human history. He ended up trapped within his own crime thriller.
The What If? series was released on August 11, 2021. It explores the things that would have happened in the major moments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that happened differently. It is an animated series. The main character would have Uatu or The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) who watches and observes the multiverse.
This series will be released on November 24, 2021. It stars Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), Barton's mentee who is training to take over the mantle of Hawkeye. Other characters include Eleanor Bishop (Vera Farmiga) who is Kate's mother, Jack Duquesne (Tony Dalton) who was Barton's Early mentor, Kazi (Fra Fee), Maya Lopez aka Echo (Alaqua Cox) who is a deaf Native American that has the ability to perfectly copy another person's movements, and William Lopez (Zahn McClarnon) who is Maya's father. The series will explore Barton's time as Ronin which was first seen on Avengers: Endgame.
In the comics, Iron Heart aka Riri Williams is a 15-year-old intelligent daughter of the late Riri Williams Sr. and is also an engineering student. Riri lives with her mother Ronnie, as well as her paternal aunt Sharon in Chicago. She is a super-genius who attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a scholarship.
As she worked alone, Riri designed an armor from material stolen from the campus. The armor is similar to the Iron Man Armor. When the campus security checks up on her, she flees the scene while wearing her suit. There is no release date as of yet, although the projected release date might be some time in 2022 or 2023. Riri Williams will be played by Dominique Thorne.
Tony Stark might have died but his spin-offs are about to take center stage. Aside from Iron Heart, Armor Wars will be another man Iron Man spin-off. War Machine or Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle) will reprise his role in the series. In the series, Rhodes must confront one of Tony Stark's greatest fears, when the armor technology fell into the wrong hands. There is no official date yet but it may premier sometime in late 2021 or 2022.
Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn will be starring in a new series for Disney+. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury, as well as Mendelsohn's shapeshifting Skrull called Talos. There is no official release date as of yet, but it was among the projects confirmed during Disney Investor Day. The series will revolve around a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls that have been infiltrating the Earth for years.
The series centers on Marc Spector, also known as the titular character Moon Knight. He is a complex vigilante that suffers from a dissociative identity disorder. His multiple identities live inside him as distinct characters in the series. There is no official release date and cast for the series as of the moment.
Jessica Gao will serve as the showrunner of the series, with the first season airing in 2022. Tatiana Maslany will play the role of Jennifer Walters. The show is a new comedy series with She-Hulk aka Jennifer Walters handling superhuman-oriented legal cases. Mark Ruffalo's the Hulk would also be in the series, alongside the Abomination played by Tim Roth.
Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American living in Jersey City and later gained shape-shifting abilities. The series is scheduled for a 2021 release.
Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
James Gunn will be writing and directing the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special which will be released in 2022. It will be Marvel's first live-action title which is fully dedicated to the holiday seasonal celebrations
Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic
There is no announced released date and cast details for the series yet. As for the plot, it could be simply an educated guess that the series might take place in a military setting of the New Republic, which was stripped back due to the Galactic Concordance, which angered the heroine Leia Organa. The remnants of the Empire are still active and remain desperate to come to power. The rangers might be the ones who would try to quell any incursions that may arise. Some rumors suggest that the rangers are the appointed local sheriffs of the New Republic which are referred to as Marshalls which may include Cobb Vance (Timothy Olyphant) and Cara Dune (Gina Carano).
Ahsoka is a spin-off series from the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano series has no release date yet, although speculations believe it would be sometime in 2022. Ahsoka will be set around the time that the Mandalorian takes place. Reportedly, the narrative would be her pursuit of General Thrawn. As for the cast members, there are no confirmed cast members yet, aside from Dawson who will play the titular character of the show.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch
Star Wars: The Bad Batch is an animated series that will also focus on adventures in the galaxy. It will be a spin-off of The Clone Wars. It will somehow serve as a sequel of some sort to the Clone Wars which finished its final season in early 2020. The series focuses on the Bad Batch, aka Clone Force 99. This crew of clone soldiers has extraordinary abilities that other standard clones in the Star Wars universe don't have. The release is set to be in 2021. The Mandalorian actress Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) will play as the voice of her character in the animated series.
Star Wars: Andor
Diego Luna's Cassian Andor will have his own Star Wars series, which will be exclusively released on Disney+ in 2022. Andor is a Rebel Alliance intelligence officer. In Rogue One, Cassian Andor was the one tasked to find and assassinate the Imperial scientist Galen Erso, who was the primary designer of the Death Star. This task led him to meet Jyn Erso, where the two helped a band of rebels to retrieve the plans to the Death Star. The series will revolve around the events that were set before Rogue One. It focuses on the rebel officer's experiences during the early years of the Rebellion.
Star Wars: The Acolyte
Star Wars: The Acolyte is a television series that is currently being developed. It will focus on the emergence of the dark side powers, during the final days of the High Republic Era. The series will be set 200 years before the events from the Star Wars prequels, with a few known direct connections to the events that happened in the centuries afterward. The release date might be sometime in 2022 or 2023.
Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as the titular character while Hayden Christensen will return as Darth Vader. The production of the Obi-Wan series was paused due to the pandemic but is set to resume in March 2021. The series will be directed by Deborah Chow.
Star Wars: Droid Story
C3PO and R2D2 will be getting their own series with Star Wars: Droid Story. The epic journey will introduce a new hero who will be guided by the iconic duo. It will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation and Industrial Light and Magic. As of now, there is no definitive release date for the series has been announced.
Star Wars: Lando
The Lando series will involve Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Willians). There are not many details on what the series would be about but it will possibly focus on the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker which left Lando's story opens. It also hinted that he will be going on a new adventure together with rogue stormtrooper Jannah. Another theory for the series is that it may follow young Lando, covering his early exploits. The release date for the series has not been announced yet.
Star Wars: Vision
Vision is a series of animated short films. It will be made by Japanese anime creators. The anthology is different from the other Star Wars animation as it may have an "anime" factor in it. Although no definitive day is given, Star Wars: Vision is confirmed for a 2021 release.
Raya and the Last Dragon
This animated film is scheduled to be released on Disney+ with Premier Access and in theaters, on March 5, 2021. The film will feature the voice of Kelly Marie Tran as aya and Awkwafina as Sisu, the last dragon. The premise of the film is when sinister monsters called Druun threatened the land of Kumandra, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Five centuries later, the monsters return and the fearless, passionate warrior Princess Raya will look for the last dragon to stop the Druun.
Baymax! Is the spin-off from Big Hero 6. Baymax is an inflatable computerized robot that was created by Tadashi Hamada. Baymax was made to serve as a personal healthcare companion. After Tadashi died, Hiro Hamada inherited Baymax which became a member of Big Hero 6. The release date is set for early 2022.
Zootopia+ is a short spin-off of Zootopia's most popular characters such as Flash the sloth, Fru Fru, and Tiger Dancers. The series will have the characters join reality shows like So You Think You Can Prance and The Real Mousewives of Little Rodentia.
The Princess and the Frog spin-off titled Tiana have no confirmed plot details yet but it may follow the titular character in her marriage with Naveen. The series may focus on her new royalty and opening her restaurant. The series will be released in 2022.
Moana will have its spin-off series on Disney+ which is set to premiere in 2023. It will be a musical series where it follows Moana in her adventures. It was first released in November 2016, which was centered on the strong-willed daughter of a Polynesian village chief. She was chosen to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti. She sailed out to find Maui, a demigod, to help her return the relic to Te Fiti and save her people.
In collaboration with pan-African entertainment company Kugali, Disney will release the animation of the African comic book series. The show is set in Lagos with some science-fiction factors included. Kugali was a company that was set up by Tolu Olowofoyeku, Fikayo Adeola, and Hamid Ibrahim. The release date is set for 2022.
SparkShorts Episode Burrow
SparkShorts is a series that came from a program wherein Pixar employees were given six months and limited budgets to develop animated short films to be released on Pixar's YouTube channel. It was subsequently released on Disney+. The episode Burrow is a short film that will be released on December 25, 2020, on Disney+
It is a series of mini-shorts that will feature some of the iconic and beloved Pixar and Disney characters. There are at least eight shorts included which are titled, Dancing With The Cars from Cars, Dory Finding from Finding Nemo, To Fitness and Beyond, as well as Fluffy Stuff with Ducky and Bunny from Toy Story, Soul of the City from Soul, CHore Day: The Incredibles Way and Cookie Num Num from The Incredibles, and A Day in the Life of the Dead from Coco. Soul of the City (Soul) will be released on December 25, 2020.
Dug Days is a spin-off based on the movie Up. It features the dog from the movie. Dug and Carl will return for the series. It will be released in the fall of 2021. Up, the movie which Dug Days was based on was considered one of Pixar's most loved and best movies.
A Cars Series
This series is a spin-off from the movie Cars and will be released on Disney+ in the fall of 2022. It will follow the adventures of Keith Ferguson's Lightning McQueen and Larry the Cable Guy's Mater. The cast includes Cristela Alonzo as Cruz Ramirez. Bret Iwan will play Tony, the Crew Chief of Bobby Swift. Other cast members include Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon, Billy Ray Cyrus, Mitchell Musso, Paul Dooley, Vincent Martella, Corbin Bleu, and Bob Peterson.
Another spin-off that will be released on Disney+ is the movie starring the weasel, Buck Wild. Buck Wild will be voiced by Simon Pegg. The other characters would be the prankster possum brothers named Crash and Eddie. It will premiere on the streaming platform in early 2022.
With these content updates for the streaming platform, the studio is obviously gearing up to expand its content library. Aside from the series, Disney also announced a list of movies under development for Marvel, Star Wars universe, and Pixar animations. The streaming service will have a $1 price hike from $6.99 monthly to $7.99 on March 26, 2021. The yearly cost will rise from $69.99 to $79.99 annually.
