Disney Boss Breaks Silence On Complaints About Company Being 'Too Woke'

There has been a lot of complaints against Disney’s ‘wokeness’ in their recent works, including Onwards where a woman cop mentioned having a ‘girlfriend’, Lightyear having a same-sex kissing scene, and even with The Little Mermaid live-action dealing with racist comments against Halle Bailey being the new Ariel. Walt Disney Company CEO, otherwise known as Disney Boss, Bob Chapek breaks silence on complaints about the company being ‘too woke.’

Live on Wall Street Journal via Deadline, Chapek mentioned delivering a more ‘customized and personalized’ consumer experience on their streaming operation, and amidst that, he addressed the complaints against Disney’s recent works. There is no question that recent Disney films are growing more of its diversity and Chapek emphasizes that Disney does stand for bringing people together and plans to keep it that way. You can watch the interview below:

“We want our content to reflect the rich, diverse world we live in. We live in a world now where everything seems to be polarized, but I think we want Disney to stand for bringing people together. I think Disney is a company that has survived for 100 years by catering to its audience and it’s going to thrive for the next 100 years by catering to its audience.”

Relatively, upon Disney’s announcement of an upcoming Snow White remake, when Peter Dinklage slammed criticism on hiring dwarfs for the film, Disney was quick to address the remake would be more modernly accurate, and therefore casting a ‘Latina princess’ for the role, Rachel Zegler. Of course, Zegler also received backlash for not being white and in response, she shrugs it off and says, “Yeah, it is because it needed that.” meanwhile, Halle Bailey’s The Little Mermaid has been ignoring such comments and focused more on making babies proud of being the new Ariel for the live-action of the Little Mermaid.

Halle Bailey’s The Little Mermaid will premiere on May 26, 2023, while Rachel Zegler’s Snow White remake is currently in the works.
