In an interview with Screen Rant, Toy Story 5 director Andrew Stanton was asked whether there are plans to develop a sixth installment of the franchise.
While he didn't confirm any official plans on the future of the Toy Story saga, he teased that the potential future movies will explore more of "the Bonnie years" before "going to other kids."
"So hopefully, I think that's the pattern, if it keeps going. So I always knew that there was a natural possibility to just follow Bonnie, and just follow her life, and just see what happens to the toys if it keeps going. So there was always that seed," the director said.
"It's like a series that doesn't know it's going to get picked up for the next season. We'd always end it like it could end here, but we've passed the badge on from Woody to Jessie at the end of 4, just in case it keeps going. So it's always been that kind of mindset."
For now, Pixar has no plans to develop a sixth movie, and they will likely wait for the reception and box office results of the new movie to see whether they should extend it once again in the future.
The studio is currently working on a third Incredibles movie and a second Coco movie as part of their future slate. A third Monsters, Inc. movie is also rumored to be in development.
What is Toy Story 5 About?
In Toy Story 5, the toys are back, and this time, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, and the rest of the gang's jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad, a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie.
It will also feature the reunion of Woody and Buzz following Woody’s decision to leave the gang and start helping lost toys at the end of the fourth film. As the toys face the tech devices of today, it’s going to be all hands on deck with some familiar and all-new characters.
The voice cast is led by Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. They are joined by Greta Lee as Lilypad, Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, and Tony Hale as Forky. The ensemble expands with Craig Robinson as Atlas, Shelby Rabara as Snappy, Scarlett Spears as Bonnie, Mykal-Michelle Harris as Blaze, and Matty Matheson as Dr. Nutcase.
Also featured are John Ratzenberger as Hamm, Wallace Shawn as Rex, Blake Clark as Slinky Dog, Jeff Bergman as Mr. Potato Head, Anna Vocino as Mrs. Potato Head, Annie Potts as Bo Peep, Bonnie Hunt as Dolly, Melissa Villaseñor as Karen Beverly, John Hopkins as Mr. Pricklepants, Kristen Schaal as Trixie, Ernie Hudson as Combat Carl, and Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom.
The film is set to release in theaters worldwide this week. Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton serves as director.
