After leaving Chicago, Holmes wound up in Philadelphia, where he murdered a man who had assisted him in multiple insurance fraud schemes. He was eventually convicted of murder and hanged in 1896.

Holmes claimed to have murdered over 100 individuals. However, his atrocities may have been exaggerated, and the real number of his victims is unknown.
