While we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see more of the next season, it was announced recently that Demon Slayer is getting a Kabuki play adaptation in 2024.

This traditional Japanese play adaptation of the hit anime series was announced via a new official website for the said production.

On the website, details about the play are listed, including its first visual, cast, staff, and expected run dates.

This isn’t the first time that a theatrical adaptation of Demon Slayer is happening. Back in 2020, Demon Slayer: The Stage happened in Tokyo and Hyogo, Japan.

Stage adaptations of popular anime aren’t new as there have already been many such stage productions.

For instance, it was announced just recently that a stage play based on Fullmetal Alchemist will happen in 2023.

These stage productions are typically done in a Western style instead of the more traditional Japanese theater styles. But this upcoming Demon Slayer production is a bit different.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Kabuki is a classical form of Japanese theater that became popular in the Edo period. Kabuki theater is characterized by flashy costumes and makeup, as well as larger-than-life performances.

Kabuki is one of the four main types of Japanese traditional theater. The other three are Noh and Kyogen, Bunraku, and Yose.

The last one, Yose, includes many variants, including Rakugo which is a type of theater that anime fans should be familiar with.

After all, it is the main subject of titles such as the anime Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and the manga series Akane-banashi.

Demon Slayer getting a Kabuki play adaptation makes sense considering that the series has a traditional Japanese setting. Though instead of being set in the Edo period, the series takes place in an alternate Taisho era.

As for the Kabuki play itself, it will star Ichikawa Somegoro VIII, Ichikawa Danko, Ichikawa Ennosuke IV, and Matsumoto Koshiro X.

The play will also incorporate new technology into the traditional Kabuki play, and it is part of the Super Kabuki II series.

The Super Kabuki II series is no stranger to anime adaptations as it also featured a production of a One Piece Kabuki play in 2015.

The Demon Slayer Kabuki play will happen in Shinbashi Enbujo in Tokyo from February to March 2024.
