Deadpool Creator Admits Knowing Hugh Jackman's Wolverine Return Long Before the Reveal

Who would have thought that Hugh Jackman will once again return to play his most iconic role as the fan-favorite X-Men character, Wolverine? Thanks to Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds, who will make that happen in the upcoming Marvel threequel Deadpool 3.

After playing the X-Men's Wolverine for more than a decade, Jackman stepped off the role by culminating the character's narrative in a heartbreaking demise, passing the mantle to his daughter, X-23 (Dafne Keen), in 2017's Logan. Following his retirement, fans were still campaigning for years to see him donning the Wolverine costume once again inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While some fans are still lifting their jaws off the floor following Wolverine's MCU return announcement, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld already knew.

In an interview with ComicBook.com's Brandon Davis, Liefeld admitted that he was informed by an "industry friend" that Jackman signed to return as Wolverine long before Reynolds posted the announcement. Check out his full quote below:

"These performers, maybe they need some time away, but the point is—the day after the Disney meeting, I had an industry friend who has never been wrong and quite powerful in the entertainment business. He calls me and says, 'Dude, Hugh is signed on. Wolverine is back. They are doing it. Don't doubt me. I have it locked. The deal is done. They're doing it. I knew when they wanted to film and kind of all that production information and all that information seems to be right on target, but nobody knew when they were going to announce it."

Deadpool 2 subtly foreshadowed Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine, but we all ignored thinking that this was just Wade Wilson's way of teasing the fans. Still, it's intriguing to know how Deadpool would establish a relationship with Wolverine, who is widely known for his short temper and obnoxious attitude.

It's also delightful to know that Liefeld is still catching up with where his comic-book character is progressing in live-action, and even expressed his interest to see the comical mercenary teaming up with Marvel fan favorites like Hulk and Thor.

Deadpool 3 is currently in development.
