  • Quick Answer: Clayface is a DCU body horror film starring Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, an actor whose facial reconstruction procedure triggers a monstrous mutation into clay.

DC Studios and Warner Bros. have released the official teaser for the upcoming DCU body horror film Clayface

The trailer introduces Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries, a struggling actor in Gotham who undergoes a horrifying transformation after a procedure meant to fix his face goes wrong.

Set within the larger interconnected DC Universe, the film explores his descent into a monstrous new identity. As it follows the first DCU movies, Superman and Supergirl, here are the biggest reveals from the Clayface trailer you may have missed.

The Regenerative Experiment

The Regenerative Experiment

The over one-minute Clayface teaser features shots of computers, X-rays, and a large IV drip containing what appears to be a regenerative experimental serum given to Matt Hagen to repair his face.

The film seems to draw inspiration from Hagen’s origin in Batman: The Animated Series, rather than his original comic book story, where he gained his abilities after coming into contact with protoplasm while scuba diving for sunken treasure.

In the animated series, Hagen is also portrayed as an actor whose face is disfigured. He is later given a formula called Renuyu by a corrupt businessman, and after being exposed to a large dose, he ultimately mutates into Clayface.

The often-abandoned section of Gotham City appears in the Clayface teaser, featuring posters for Amusement Mile.

The park is known as a hideout for some of Gotham’s most dangerous criminals, particularly The Joker, who is naturally drawn to its decaying carnival remnants.

The Narrows

The Gotham City ferry also appears in the trailer, with “The Narrows” visible on the walkways leading to the docks.

This confirms the inclusion of Gotham’s older, more rundown district, first introduced in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.

In Nolan’s trilogy, The Narrows is where Arkham Asylum is located, though in the comics, it was later reimagined as being on its own island in Gotham Harbor.

Fans finally get a glimpse of the Gotham skyline in live action in the Clayface teaser, after it was first introduced in the animated series Creature Commandos.

Alongside exploring the origins of a major Batman villain, the film also offers a closer look at the Caped Crusader’s home city ahead of his DCU debut. However, it remains unclear who will portray Bruce Wayne in this new interconnected universe.

The Clayface trailer also offers a first look at Caitlyn Corr, played by Naomi Ackie. While not a character from the original DC Comics, she is introduced as a biotech scientist who provides Matt Hagen with an experimental regenerative compound and later becomes his love interest.

Corr may play a key role in helping Hagen control his abilities, maintain his human form, and master his shape-shifting powers.

The Gotham City Police

Before the Clayface teaser ends, a Gotham City Police cruiser appears, potentially hinting at the involvement of familiar characters such as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock, and/or Renée Montoya.

While their inclusion has not been confirmed, their presence would further establish Gotham City’s world ahead of The Brave and the Bold, the upcoming Batman film in the DCU.

Clayface Forming His Weapon

In DC Comics, Clayface is known for his ability to reshape his body and transform his limbs into various weapons, and the same trait is expected to appear in his solo film.

Shadows of Matt Hagen in a dark alleyway show him turning his arm into a spiked club, teasing his eventual form as a hulking, clay-like monster.

That said, fans may also learn where Hagen’s origin fits within the established DCU timeline, especially in relation to other projects such as his appearance in Creature Commandos, where he is seen fighting Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein.

“Do You Realize?”

Lastly, fans may not have noticed that the song playing in the background of the Clayface teaser is a slower, more haunting version of “Do You Realize?” by The Flaming Lips.

With the lyric “Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face?” it’s a fitting choice for Matt Hagen’s tragic transformation.

The original version of the song was also used in the first teaser for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 from Marvel Studios.

Clayface is set to hit theaters on October 23.
