DC Studios Boss Blasts Marvel Shake-Up For Producing ‘Boring’ Films

Is the superhero genre era over? Marvel Studios is currently experiencing quite a shake-up at Disney, apart from their massive layoffs at Marvel Entertainment, Marvel Phase 5 is nowhere half done. Now, DC Studios boss James Gunn shines upon what exactly the superhero genre should do amid the ever-developing superhero fatigue of moviegoers.

“I think there is such a thing as superhero fatigue. [But] I think it doesn’t have anything to do with superheroes, it has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told,” Gunn said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. The DC Studios boss shed light that while we love superheroes (such as Superman, Batman, and Iron Man), “If it becomes just a bunch of nonsense on screen, it gets really boring.”

Gunn has recently begun the revival for the new DC Chapter 1 slate, and claims that the new upcoming films are aiming to have “emotionally grounded stories”, as opposed to franchises that focus more on clever designs and visual effects than telling the good story of it all.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with whether they’re superhero movies or not. If you don’t have the story at the base of it, just watching things bash each other, no matter how clever those bashing moments are, no matter how clever the designs and the VFX are, it just gets fatiguing, and I think that’s very, very real.”

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios has been undergoing the consequences of focusing too much on how good their VFX works for the MCU fans. The Multiverse Saga hasn’t been doing very well since we lost the OG classic Avengers team in Avengers: Endgame.

Aside from this, former Marvel exec Victoria Alonso had been reported to be the reason behind the low quality films Marvel has been releasing over the years. Apparently, hiring inexperienced directors to work on major MCU films just so Marvel Studios would still be able to gain full creative control rather than the team in charge of producing the content.

While Gunn’s statement is not directed specifically at Marvel Studios, his comment rings truer than ever amid the massive layoffs and adjustment period for Marvel Phase 5 in continuing its progression over the year. Not to mention, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania setting up the MCU for failure should this plan still move forward.
