As one of the cult series that eventually turned into a pop culture touchstone, The X-Files, is one of the shows that fans want to have a reboot or revival. However, it looks like its stars, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, are both hesitant about it, and the former even gives the best answer when asked about it.

Duchovny and Anderson want to see a major change happen in The X-Files before they take on their roles again.

David Duchovny Discusses Possibilities of Reprising His The X-Files Role

In an interview on The Discourse podcast to promote his new graphic novel Kepler, the 62-year-old discussed if he would ever reprise his role as Mulder.

“For me coming back, it’s always like, ‘Well, what are the stories? What’s the reason for being at this point?’ I mean, there are many reasons for being,” he said.

“One of them might be because people want to see it. Another would be that Chris [Carter] or someone that Chris knows and likes says, ‘Oh, I’ve got a story to tell! Check this out – this is how we could do this now,” he continued. “There’s not a world where we just come back and do it the way we did before because the world has changed.”

The Change David Duchovny Wants to See

One of the factors that Duchovny may decide to reprise his role in the series is the change of the story.

“You’re going to play this guy in his thirties and his sixties. That’s an interesting challenge, but you don’t want to play it the same way,” he explained.

“You don’t want to tell the same stories because that becomes kind of weird and obscene,” he added. “You don’t want to be the [Rolling] Stones still writing about making out with girls in the back seat of a car when they’re eighty years old. I mean, you could do it, and you could make a lot of money at it, but part of you would die.”

Gillian Anderson on Reprising Her The X-Files Role

Alternatively, Anderson is yet to close her doors to a possible The X-Files reboot or a new season, though it’s not her priority. She also seemed to have the same sentiments as Duchovny about the series’ change of plotline.

“It just feels like such an old idea. I’ve done it, I did it for so many years, and it also ended on such an unfortunate note,” she told IndieWire in April. “In order to even begin to have that conversation [about another season] there would need to be a whole new set of writers and the baton would need to be handed on for it to feel like it was new and progressive. So yeah, it’s very much in the past.”
