Even before The Mummy comes out in theaters, Universal is slowly letting details trickle in regarding their other planned movies for the Dark Universe.
It's going to be an insane onslaught of monsters this time, because a renowned classic and even a Disney remake will join the lineup. In an interview with Fandom, Alex Kurtzman, the director and producer of The Mummy, has revealed what could be the confirmed lineup so far:
"We know we're going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man."
In case you aren't following the Dark Universe announcements, the new ones are Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback of Notre Dame. And similar to what may happen to The Mummy, where we'll be introduced to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Kurtzman teased that it's possible to explore spinoffs from those movies themselves. He stated that it's possible to explore characters within those films and see if they can expand and unveil deeper mythologies that are related to the monsters.
"I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting."
Does that last statement hint that, apart from simple remakes, we'll also see an exploration of how these stories can interweave for some original take on the stories?
The Dark Universe project itself seems to be going way better and faster than expected. Kurtzman even offered a few actors that he would love to bring into the franchise, putting in the names of Angelina Jolie, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, and even Jennifer Lawrence into the mix.
The Mummy will be out in theaters on June 9, and stars Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, and Sofia Boutella.
