Damon Lindelof Gives His Best to the Team Taking Over His Star Wars Movie

During the recently conducted Star Wars Celebration, a slate of upcoming Star Wars projects for the big screen and Disney+ was announced, one of which is a feature film to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. There was no news regarding who will pen the script, but reports have it that Damon Lindelof was previously involved before he was let go for an allegedly bad script.

In a recent interview with Variety, Lindelof confirmed that he’s no longer part of the production but gave his wishes to the team that will take it from here. “The movie is still happening, but unfortunately not with me. I wish them all the best of luck. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is an incredible director, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with.” he said.

Aside from Lindelof, Justin Britt-Gibson also departed as a co-writer. The upcoming film is set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker and will see Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker return to the franchise. Lindelof also seemingly hinted that his script wasn't at its best before it was canned.

“I will just say, that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high. If it can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist. That’s all I’ll say, because I have the same association with it as you do, which is, it’s the first movie I saw sitting in my dad’s lap, four years old, May of ’77.” he said.

Lindelof continued, “I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem, you start to get in the kitchen and you just go, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.’ We’ll just leave it at that point.”

Fans were disappointed over Lindelof's departure from the project because he originally pitched the idea to Lucasfilm. However, he is reportedly to retain a producer title on the film as part of his initial deal with Lucasfilm, but he is expected to draw the line on any creative involvement.
