Two years after it was announced, Trigger’s Cyberpunk anime was finally released yesterday. And while fans and critics are liking it, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is getting criticized for its English subtitles on Netflix.
While the show is available with an English dub, lots of fans want to watch the show with the Japanese dub. After all, not only is this an actual Japan-produced anime, but it also features a stacked Japanese voice cast.
Sadly though, it seems that the Japanese dub option won’t give viewers the best experience because of the English subs.
Following the show’s release yesterday, fans have taken to Twitter to share their disappointment with the English subs.
Some complaints include how the subtitles have many errors. There are also tweets complaining about how the English subtitles use the English dub script.
Typically, English anime subtitles provide more accurate translations of the original script, while English dub scripts take more liberties to better match the animation.
But with Cyberpunk seemingly repurposing the English dub script, the subtitles aren’t as accurate according to some fans.
Fans weren’t the only ones to share their disappointment with the subtitles though.
On Twitter, Crunchyroll Senior Editorial Producer Liam Dempsey also complained about the English closed captions not matching what’s spoken.
The example provided was a scene in the show's third episode. Dempsey further added that the closed caption subs were distracting enough that they had to be turned off.

Aside from the errors, some fans also criticized the technical aspects of the subtitles.
Among the complaints are how the subtitles are semi-transparent in some parts, making them difficult or even impossible to see.
Along with this, there are also reports from viewers that the Japanese audio is poorly mixed, with audio being lower in volume compared to the music.
Taking these fan complaints into consideration, it seems that the best way to watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners right now is with the English dub with closed caption subtitles turned off (unless you need them).
Despite these criticisms, the overall reaction to the anime series is highly positive. Critics and fans alike are praising its story and animation.
Those who are fans of Cyberpunk 2077 and viewers that are new to the series have both enjoyed the show.
All 10 episodes of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are now streaming on Netflix.
