When Netflix released Cyberpunk: Edgerunners in 2022, it easily became one of the streaming giant's best original anime series. With that said, will there be a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 in the future? Keep on reading to find out the latest updates.

The futuristic show is set in the world of CD Projekt Red's popular RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, and it was developed by Japan's Studio Trigger, the acclaimed animation studio behind Kill la Kill, Inferno Cop, Little Witch Academia, and more.

If you're wondering what Edgerunners is about, the anime series follows David, a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body-modification-obsessed city of the future known as Night City.

Having everything to lose, he decides to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner – a mercenary outlaw also known as cyberpunk - after he meets a mysterious hacker named Lucy.

He will be fighting Night City's most notorious criminals and cyberpsychos in his mission to become a so-called legend.

Has Netflix Renewed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners for Season 2?

While CD Projekt Red has expressed plans to expand the world of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher outside of the video games, there are currently no plans for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2.

Netflix, Studio Trigger, and CD Projekt Red haven't announced any plans to produce more episodes of the anime series, and it's likely that Edgerunners will only have one season.

The sci-fi anime has always been advertised as a standalone story, and Studio Trigger is known for producing anime shows that only last for one season.

However, due to the massive popularity of Cyberpunk 2077 and the positive reviews for Edgerunners, there will likely be a demand for more episodes.

Edgerunners also helped boost sales for Cyberpunk 2077. After the premiere of the anime, CD Projekt's RPG sold past 20 million copies, and the official Twitter page for the game shared a message to thank the fans:

The protagonist David ends up getting killed by Adam Smasher in the final episode of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as Lucy and Falco make their escape.

Although the story is considered a standalone, we could see the story for the potential second season focus more on Lucy and other characters' perspectives.

However, Satoru Honma, a Japanese executive with CD Projekt Red, talked to Famitsu about Cyberpunk in an interview, and it was there the executive admitted that there are no plans to make Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2.

According to Honma, Edgerunners was planned as a standalone project from its inception.

"However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there's no such thing as 'we are actually working on Season 2 in the background'," the exec said.

"I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback," Honma added.

"Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don't know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different."

With the exception of sci-fi mecha anime SSSS.Dynazenon, Studio Trigger rarely makes follow-up seasons for its titles regardless of how popular they are.

Though there are no plans for another season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Honma said he’d personally like to continue producing anime projects in the future with Japanese studios because of the positive feedback Edgerunners received.

At this point, CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger clearly have no plans to make Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2.

A year later, in October 2023, CD Projekt Red once again unveiled an upcoming project for Cyberpunk. This time, it's a live-action series for Cyberpunk 2077—a first in the series' franchise.

Not many details have been revealed about the project, but it is being done in collaboration with Anonymous Content, an entertainment company best known for producing shows like Netflix's 13 Reasons Why and The OA.

It's not known yet whether the Cyberpunk 2077 live-action will be a series or a feature film as the project is still in its early stages.

Although CD Projekt Red hasn't mentioned any plans for an upcoming Cyberpunk anime, the confirmation of a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel and live-action project certainly increases the chances of the popular franchise getting another anime series in the future.

We will update this space if Cyberpunk: Edgerunners gets officially renewed or canceled, so stay tuned!
