Is Castlevania: Nocturne a Sequel or a Prequel?

Castlevania: Nocturne is a spinoff/sequel to the original series. It takes place 300 years after the events of the original series and is set in 1792 during the French Revolution (the original series takes place in the 1470s in Wallachia).

Castlevania: Nocturne is not a direct continuation of the original series and features a new set of characters, including Richter Belmont (Trevor and Sypha’s descendant), Maria Renard, and Annette.

While Castlevania mainly revolved around Dracula’s revenge after his human wife, Lisa Tepes, was falsely accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake, Castlevania: Nocturne follows Richter and his team during the French Revolution as they take down the vampire queen Erzsebet Báthory and prevent an apocalypse.

So, it’s a new story with a new set of heroes and villains in Castlevania: Nocturne.

Since Castlevania: Nocturne is not a direct continuation of the events in the original series, as it takes place centuries later, there is no need to watch Castlevania first.

The spinoff draws inspiration from 1993’s Rondo of Blood and its sequel, Symphony of the Night. The story of the spinoff is not directly linked to the story in the original series.

So, you do not have to watch Castlevania first to understand the story in Castlevania: Nocturne. However, it is best to watch the original series first to get to know more about the Castlevania universe.

The story in the original series is important, as it shows how Dracula’s war with the humans came to be, and how Trevor Belmont, Richter’s ancestor, became a renowned vampire hunter.

There are also some Castlevania references in Nocturne, and so far, one character from the original series appears in the spinoff. So, it is best to be prepared by watching Castlevania first.
