Is Bungo Stray Dogs Based on a Manga or Light Novel?
The Bungo Stray Dogs anime is based on a manga illustrated by Sango Harukawa and written by Kafka Asagiri. It was serialized in Young Ace magazine in 2012 and is still ongoing.
Eventually, various light novels were published after the success of the manga, and studio Bones adapted it into an anime in 2016.
A spinoff manga titled BEAST, which focuses on Ryunosuke Akutagawa, was released in 2019.
In the same year, another spinoff manga entitled Bungo Stray Dogs: Dazai, Chūya, Age Fifteen also came out.
It revolves around the backstories of Dazai and Chuya, as the title implies.
The anime, on the other hand, was released in 2016 and was split into two parts. It was then followed by an OVA in 2017 and the third season in 2019.
Throughout its run, the anime proved to be successful enough that a spinoff manga titled Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! was adapted into an anime in 2021.
The fifth season was released in July 2023. Since it has surpassed manga events by a bit, it is unknown if Season 6 will take its own, different direction or wait for the manga to release more chapters.
