Stephen Dunn, who served as showrunner for the second revival of Queer as Folk, may be ready to tackle a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
Back in 2018, it was claimed that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer remake was in the works at Fox 21 Television Studios, with Monica Owusu-Breen as showrunner and Joss Whedon returning as executive producer. While plot information was limited, it was reported that a Black actor will play the lead in the reboot.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, the original lead, seemed to welcome the move, suggesting Zendaya be the new Buffy. The fate of the reboot is still unknown, but Dunn, who is a major Buffy fan, is quite interested.
Stephen Dunn Wants to Helm a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot
Dunn was asked if he had ever considered rebooting Buffy the Vampire Slayer in a recent interview with Express.
"That's a dream of mine,” Dunn said. “Buffy is my lifeblood."
He has previous experience relaunching beloved television programs, having just done so with Queer as Folk for Peacock.
Dunn expands on his love for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and comments on the inclusion of openly gay characters like Alyson Hannigan's Willow Rosenberg, which resonated with him because he is queer.
References to the show can be found throughout Dunn's Queer as Folk, most notably through the character Julian, who is a huge Buffy fan. This is arguably the first time Dunn's name has been mentioned in connection with a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, and while his admiration for the show is genuine, he makes no indication that he'll be returning to the Buffy-verse anytime soon.
Hopes are Up
There may be a chance that Dunn will be involved if the Owusu-Breen Buffy reboot is still going forward. Dunn's ability to revitalize a show is demonstrated by the success of Queer as Folk, which is currently awaiting word on whether it will return for a Season 2.
Dunn's interest in Buffy furthers the argument that a reboot would respect the original lore while offering viewers something new and contemporary.
The allegations against Whedon regarding abuse and harassment could endanger his role as executive producer for the reboot. His removal might give Dunn the chance to collaborate with Owusu-Breen and realize his vision for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
