In Episode 19, we see Morpho in all its horror. It definitely makes you worry about Shin for a while, no matter what he's survived before. Even more horrifyingly, the damaged Morpho is revealed to be only a bait for another; one that Kiriya controls.

Shinnei descends into a battle mode only Kurena manages to snap him out of. Kiriya's superior, "No-Face" (which I can't repeat with a straight face without thinking of Spirited Away) orders him to withdraw. Shin and his friends go after him. Federacy rescues Grethe and the other Nordlicht survivors, but can't support Shin.

During a break, Shin and his comrades discover Frederica, who managed to sneak in and stay with them. Their first instinct is to be angry at her. For her part, Frederica explains that as a child "hostage" her role isn't to force them into battle. Rather, her goal is to ensure they return home, rather than fight to the death as they learned in 86. Her hope is that if they have her with them, they will actually care about surviving, rather than just winning. The group has no choice but to accept her presence. Shin ominously gives her a gun to kill herself and avoid capture if all adults die. Frederica refuses to even consider such a possibility.
